Singapore’s many hiking trails are sure to bring you and your doggo closer to nature. Walk down The Green Corridor, an abandoned railway track full of colonial-era artefacts only visible to those with a keen eye.If your sea legs are up for the challenge, why not hit the beach and rent a kayak? Oar in hand and doggo on board, you can join kayak tours to explore Singapore’s mangroves and river biomes that host a myriad of flora and fauna. Feeding Your Fussy Feline

Like a toddler looking away when you present them with their spoonful of porridge, you’ll be in for a bad time if you try to force-feed your cat. These animals are apex predators, masters of their own will, and will only eat what they want when they want it. So how can you ease them into a meal routine? Here are four easy steps to feeding your fussy feline.

#1. Reduce their treats

Say it ain’t so! Our adorable furbabies? Getting fewer treats? The audacity! Before you write this off, consider that your cat would have a lesser appetite if fed with treats in between meals. They may also be less compelled to eat their main meals since they know they will get treats later. We’re not saying you shouldn’t give treats at all, just reduce it to once or twice a day.

#2. Play with them before their meal

That’s right — play with them! Work up their appetite by dedicating about 10 minutes to getting active with their favourite toys. By the time you’re done, they’ll be hungry enough to eat just about anything. The extra calories burnt also keep them fit and deter feline obesity!

#3. Mixing textures

If your cat is not interested in the food you have, why not change things up by mixing different types of foods together? Dry kibbles can be paired with raw foods or wet foods to give a range of tastes and textures. EmBARK on a majestic dog cruise aboard the Royal Albatross with Olliewoof_Sheltie

The Royal Albatross is Asia’s only Luxury Tall Ship — meaning that has been fitted to look like a traditional ocean-going vessel (like the ones you’ve seen in pirate movies). This modern superyacht boasts four masts with 22 sails, making it look like it came straight out of the 15th Century.

The Royal Albatross also hosts a leisurely day trip around The Singapore Straits, coupled with a romantic three to six-course meal service for both you and your furbaby; better known as a Dog Cruise. After winning our last giveaway, Shetland Sheepdog @Olliewoof and passionate dog mom Sandra Vincent boarded the majestic ship for their grand voyage around the straits. 

Q: Have you been on any cruises with Ollie before?

Sandra: When I told my friends I was going on a dog cruise, they looked absolutely surprised. “A cruise dedicated to dogs? Is there such a thing? What kind of ship is it? Is there a casino on board?” Those were the questions I received in return.

The Royal Albatross is famous for being booked for several corporate and personal occasions. In fact, it is also the world’s first dedicated dog cruise onboard a luxury tall ship! I was beyond excited to go for it and so a date that was during the March term break just seemed perfect!

Q: What preparations did you make for Ollie before going aboard the DogCruise? 

Sandra: While awaiting the date of the cruise, like most dog mums I was guilty of searching for the perfect bandana or bowtie for Ollie. I knew he did not like hats, so all the cute ship captain ones were rejected. 

In the end, I decided he looked best in his barkday suit, all-natural, fluffy and majestic.

Q: What was the boarding process like? Were there any difficulties?

Sandra: On the day of the cruise, the weather app said it might rain that afternoon so I was keeping my fingers crossed. Good news — glorious sunlight bathed the sky!

The check-in process was smooth, very organised and efficient, which was something I really appreciated. The walk up the gangway was also in batches so you can take lovely videos and pictures while moving.

Seats are on a first-come-first-served basis and honestly, I did not know what to expect or where is ideal. I know it’s really popular to sit at the front, but I also knew I wanted a bench for Ollie to sit comfortably in. Thus, I chose a seat in the middle with a view of the sea. Ollie was mighty pleased with his seat as you can tell in the way he was soaking in all the wind and chill vibes of the ship.

Q: How were the service and crew of The Royal Albatross?

The service of the crew was great. They were attentive and quick and the timing for the food for the doggos and humans was just right. It was just so relaxing to see the sunset and hear the sound of the waves on the hull while slowly dining with your loved ones.

And I must say, the toilet was so well-maintained and clean too! I was trying not to drink too much as I’ve had bad experiences in the toilet of ships before, so I’m so glad it wasn’t like that at all!

Overall, it was a lovely dining experience with our darling Ollie and that’s got to be the best part of it all! Would I book this again? Definitely! It’s a perfect place to celebrate an event or just to cruise over dinner!

Pawjourr Reviews: Top Top “Delicate Dog” Shampoo and “Pampered Pooch” Conditioner

It’s no secret that our pooches are capable of self-maintenance. The occasional lick can help to clear dirt and keep their fur clean, but it’ll never be as effective as proper dog shampoo. Any pawrent would also want to make sure the hair care they use won’t strip their furbabies of their natural oils, nor will it use any chemicals that might be toxic to them.

With Dexter, it’s hard to tell where the body ends and the fur begins.

My tiny boy runs around a lot, and his puffy hair makes him look like a giant dust bunny. ? Luckily for me, Top Top’s conditioner claims to soften hard, brittle hair. That makes it a perfect fit for dog breeds like Chihuahuas, Yorkies, and Spitzs (including Poms like Dexter!), all of whom have fur that require a moderate amount of brushing and maintenance. The shampoo also touts a long-lasting fragrance that eliminates doggy odour for up to seven days. Those are bold words, considering Dexter’s current dog shampoo fragrance wears off in three to four days. ?

Let’s put that claim to the test! 

After filling up the little tub for Dexter, I started him out with Top Top’s “Delicate Dog” Shampoo ($17.90). Upon opening the bottle, I could smell a sweet and floral flavour from its key ingredient: shea butter. Shea butter is well known for its curative properties and helps to guard against heat and UV rays, something we all have to deal with in Singapore’s climate. ?

Unlike most shampoos, Top Top’s soap-free solution was much gentler on Dexter’s skin and will not wipe off all his naturally-produced oils. He was really relaxed and comfortable just having me scrub down his fur, we even had some fun with the foam! 

Scrubbing through all of Dexter’s fur is usually tough because I have to get deep into his stubborn spots in case some dirt and bacteria decide to take up residence on him. Knowing that Top Top’s shampoo is antibacterial and effective against fungal skin diseases really takes a load off my mind.

Washed off, now for the conditioner!While the shampoo focused more on its antibacterial properties, the Top Top “Pampered Pooch” Conditioner ($17.90) had a soothing fragrance and fur-softening qualities that made for a pleasant pairing! Their other key ingredient, coconut oil, not only made Dexter’s fur softer and smoother, but it also helped to remove any doggy odour he had before his bath!

My boy released all his pent-up hyperactivity in one go before I took him out of the tub.

As I wiped Dexter down, I could already feel the difference — there weren’t any tangled clumps of fur. I personally enjoyed blow-drying his fur because of the sweet aroma of Dexter’s fur. It was sweet but not overpowering, with notes of sugar almost reminiscent of caramel candy ?. Brushing him after his shower was a breeze as I didn’t have to stop my hairdryer multiple times to remove his tangles.

Verdict

I’d say I’m pretty sold on Top Top’s selection. I’ve never had this little fuss brushing Dexter’s frizzy coat before. My Dexter is still puffy (I guess some things can’t beat genetics) but his softness is on a whole other level now. I am also amazed at how effective their products were; “long-lasting smell for up to a week” is no mean feat. About four days after his shower, I brought Dexter out for a doggie playdate with all our other office pawpals and he had a field day with them — running all around the office and winding up dog-tired by the end of the day. The boy took a fat nap and he was recharged by morning… and still smelled delicious!

On another point, the shampoo and conditioner were both pretty thick, so I had to water it down just a little bit so I could lather evenly without it being too concentrated.

For what it’s worth, Top Top is pretty affordable too. Most quality dog shampoos can go up to 30 or 40 dollars per bottle. Meanwhile, Top Top delivers quality results at half the price; it’s quite a steal.

Photoism’s Pet-Friendly Studio Opens In Tampines One

Sat in the active heartlands of Tampines is the newest self-photo studio, Photoism. Part of the selfphotostudio.sg group, Photoism is the only studio in the group that allows Pet photography! With that in mind, Photoism invited us over for an experience with our furbabies. Isabel, our Campaign and Operations Intern, reports her experience.

First Impressions

Isabel is not new to self-photo studios — she has visited various other studios and has always been vocal about the space (or lack thereof). “I’m glad that Photoism was much bigger than the ones I’ve previously been to,” she said. Upon entering the studio, patrons will be able to wait by the sofas and chairs. A full-body mirror also allows them to check their outfit and look before beginning their session.

While other self-photo studios only have one or two rooms, Photoism has double that number (four studios) which makes booking more accessible for everyone. Pet owners won’t have to worry about their pets’ personal space either. The register is generously spaced to accommodate pets, ensuring that pawrents are able to keep their pets a good comfortable distance from each other.

The Studio Experience

Contrary to other self-photo studios’ space efficiency, Photoism’s studio is spacious enough to comfortably house a family portrait or a squad pic. There’s also a monitor in the studio that will display the photo that you have just taken. Isabel commended this feature as a big plus compared to other studios. “I really like this as I can see how to adjust myself to get the perfect photos, some places do not provide the monitor.”

Isabel put Photoism’s pet-friendly claim to the test during her visit. “I requested for a bench as Kopi would definitely not fit on the high stool. However, the bench was still a little small for her. She could sit on it, but the narrow width make her scared of falling off. She couldn’t get fully comfortable during the shoot.”

Pawrents looking to visit Photoism should consider various workarounds for your pet size:

  • Big dogs: Lower the height of the adjustable camera to fit your pawpal into frame
  • Stout dogs: Consider cradling your pawpal in your arms, or resting them on your lap

Costumes and Props

The studio’s variety of props was fairly limited at the time — a busy timeslot would mean fewer options to work with. “Some of the Christmas headbands were very cute though! Those would definitely make cute couple/group photos!” Isabel added that she was not particularly bothered as she prefers her photos without props.

Photoism also has costumes for pets for various occasions, including jumpers that look like your pawpal is part of Squid Game. As for Kopi, the doggo did not get to wear the costumes as they were too small.

While You Wait

Waiting Time

Pawrents looking to visit do take note: The photos will take a considerable length of time to load and save due to the file sizes and sheer volume of photos. “The prints took about 40mins to be ready which is a reasonable amount of time,” Isabel said. “My photos were ready just before closing time, so I was lucky to get them in time. If not, I would have had to drop by another day.”

Photoism is situated in the central region of Tampines, which allows patrons to roam while waiting for their images to load. The direct area of Tampines ONE and its neighbouring malls, however, do not have pet-friendly areas to rest or eat at, so pet owners going to Photoism are advised to simply wait at the reception instead.

“When I booked the place, I was concerned that Kopi will not be able to enter the mall as I thought the entrance would be inside the mall. Turns out Photoism’s entrance faces the outside of the mall, so pet owners don’t have to worry!”

Q&A

Most of Kopi’s pics are done with natural light/outdoors, so what is it like taking photos in a studio for a change?

I can get better quality photos! Studio cameras are very focused on the person/Kopi, so the photo will look nicer as compared to what I usually take.

The studio probably uses strobe lights for their flash. Was it uncomfortable for kopi’s eyes?

Kopi did not seem bothered by the light at all. She didn’t really pay attention to the beeping sound as well, which is a good thing as Singapore Specials are usually very wary of new environments. Small changes in the environment, such as sounds, can easily trigger them.

An itch to scratch — TtangKong’s journey with Glacier Peak Holistics Pet Wellness Life Stress Scan

More often than not, your pawpal may be exposed to allergens that you are not even aware of, and it makes them very uncomfortable. JJ E-Homez Holistic Pet understands that frustration, which is why they are dedicated to helping Pawrents in understanding their pets inside and out. The folks at JJ E-Homez Holistic Pet partnered with Glacier Peak Holistics to bring pawrents the Pet Wellness Life Stress Scan, an alternative comprehensive food and environmental sensitivity test.

Introducing TtangKong

TtangKong is an energetic long-haired dachshund, wildly sociable and loves to be out with her pawfriends. She spends a lot of time enjoying the great outdoors with her hoomom, Amy. However, the doggo had developed severe allergies in early 2019 and had to be put on an E-collar 24/7. TtangKong’s allergies give her unbearable itches, to which she scratches to the point of bleeding. Because of that, she now has bald spots that have not grown back for 8 months.

The search for a remedy

Amy searched high and low for remedies, trying close to every treatment available: supplements, anti-itch sprays, biological medication, and elimination diets. With the exception of steroids — which are topical and advised to be for short-term use only — nothing seemed to be completely effective. Even when Amy brought TtangKong to try a Canine Food Reaction Test, the results were limited and did not give her the insight she was looking for.

Distressed, Amy gave up on veterinary consultations and fell back to a series of trial and error purchases in an attempt to control the severity of TtangKong’s itches. Conducting the Pet Wellness Life Stress Scan

As part of the process, JJ E-Homez Holistic Pet visited TtangKong at Amy’s home to assist with the process*. Unlike traditional allergy tests, which require blood samples, this stress scan uses a non-invasive process (only requiring hair and saliva samples). TtangKong cooperated with the staff and the sample collection was smooth sailing. After that it was only a matter of waiting for the results — seven days to be exact.

How the scan works

  • Homeostasis — Bioenergetic balance in one’s body. Being a combination of western and eastern medicinal concepts, maintaining homeostasis is key to a healthy body.
  • Energetic imbalance — Stemming from a variety of sources such as inflammations, bacterial infections, or changes in diet. An energetic imbalance may leave the body susceptible to diseases and allergy-type symptoms.
  • ELISA — Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. It is a test that detects antibodies in the blood. 

The scan’s SCIO Biofeedback Technology, manufactured by Quantum World Vision and approved by FDA, is a device that is used to detect stress. It uses the DNA in samples to measure the animal’s homeostasis to detect signs of stress and energetic resonance. Stressors in the scan are then reflected in relation to over 300 food and environmental factors that may disturb a pet’s energy balance.

While Glacier Peak Holistics Pet Wellness Life Stress Scan detects stressors, it is not a true allergy test, like ELISA and antibody testing, that uses blood samples. The stress scan serves as a roadmap to help you get your pawpal’s wellness back into balance, by removing the stressors and supporting the immune system at the point of time. 

The scan indicates environmental and dietary factors that could be causing your pet to face allergy-type symptoms.  The ultimate goal of the scan is for pawrents to understand which part of their pawpal’s diet and lifestyle might be contributing to the immune reactivity and to adjust them to achieve homeostasis and minimise chances for allergy-type symptoms to manifest.

The comprehensive test results from Glacier Peak

Once the results are out, JJ E-Homez Holistic Pet team will contact the applicant to help interpret and answer any questions about the results, as well as recommend a suitable course of action for the pet parents. Pawrents moving forward could then be able to adjust dietary and lifestyle plans to reduce pawpals from experiencing stressors they are susceptible to.

TtangKong’s results and solutions

The scan indicated that TtangKong’s itches were caused by a combination of yeast and other factors, giving rise to a weak immune system. Amy has since switched TtangKong’s food and tried to avoid certain environmental factors. TtangKong’s rashes have calmed down and her redness has also reduced. 

“Hopefully we won’t have to monitor her as intently to stop her scratching and licking,” said Amy. With the new food plan reducing the cultivation of yeast in TtangKong’s body, the new lifestyle could help to promote hair growth on her belly and other bald spots.
