Let’s Protect our Loved Ones with Pet Insurance!

The month of August marks a special event for Singaporeans.

On the 9th of August, Singaporeans gather around to celebrate their National Day. Due to heightened pandemic alerts, celebrations were held online. As such, many Singaporeans took this opportunity to spend some time with their loved ones in the comfort and safety of their homes.

Since adopting Dexter, the 9th of August marks more than 1 special occasion for Shermaine. Here’s what she had to say:

What does Singapore mean to you and how will you be celebrating National Day this year?

Growing up in Singapore, this country symbolises comfort and security for me.

Especially during these trying times, I am glad that our pandemic situation has not spiralled out of control. I feel assured that we are reasonably protected in Singapore!

I also enjoy the peace and security we have in Singapore that I think we should definitely not take for granted!

This year, the performances have been postponed, but I believe my family and I would still be up to watch the parade! Definitely can’t miss out on the flypast, am I right? ?

Afterwards, it would just be a really chill day. I intend to catch up on some family time and celebrate my little monkey’s* birthday! I ordered a birthday cake for him so I am pretty excited about that. It will be a small celebration though since we are unable to invite his doggy friends.

*Little Monkey is the nickname Shermaine has for her pomeranian dog, Dexter.

Oh wow, what a surprise! What does it mean to celebrate both Dexter and Singapore’s birthday on the same day?

I was relatively surprised too when I found out that he is a National Day baby. It is great because I can be sure I would always have time to celebrate his birthday since it is a Public Holiday. Plus, enjoy some fireworks! (though not this year)

Dexter is my second dog after the sudden passing of my first dog named Junior. Hence, I understand wholeheartedly the importance of cherishing every moment I have with him. He is an integral part of my family so I always feel the need to protect him. Especially since he is dependent on me for his living.

He is my baby and I will do anything to keep him safe and happy!

That is so sweet! I can sense that you share a deep bond with Dexter. What are some steps you take to protect your furkid?

I bring him out for regular checkups which are super important. I also believe in the importance of vaccinating your pets. Since Dexter is relatively small, I have to be sure not to over-vaccinate him. Just the essential shots to reduce his susceptibility to illnesses. Prevention is better than cure!

My expenditure for vet visits is constantly increasing. Based on my past experience with Junior, medical costs are always a concern. From the pet owners I have talked to, most of them recommended pet insurance. I think it works similarly to human’s insurance, right?

If we purchase insurance for our family members, and Dexter is family, then certainly I should be getting him some too!

Speaking of pet insurance, have you heard about Aon Happy Tails?

Yes, I have!

I heard that toy and small breeds like Pomeranians are very prone to joint issues such as luxating patella. Dexter is one of them. For an active dog like him who is constantly jumping and running around, I worry about him constantly. However, I am aware that luxating patella is only covered by Aon Happy Tails pet insurance if it is not a pre-existing condition.

That being said, for dog owners who are extremely concerned about their dog’s safety- I would recommend looking into Aon Happy Tails pet insurance. Even though Dexter’s luxating patella would not be covered, I would still consider purchasing it, in case he develops further issues in the future.

Plus, I’ve always heard good recommendations and reviews regarding Aon Happy Tails. Just remember to cut down on the BBT* so that your little one is well protected! #WorthIt

* BBT refers to bubble tea, one of Shermaine’s favourite drinks.

Aon Happy Tails pet insurance covers a wide range of illnesses and medical conditions such as:

  • Luxating Patella
  • Hip and Elbow Dyplasia
  • Cherry Eye
  • Glaucoma
  • Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD)
  • Femoral Head and Neck Excision

** DISCLAIMER: There is a ninety (90) days waiting period for sicknesses and a twelve (12) month waiting period for Specified Hereditary and Congenital sicknesses from the policy’s first commencement during which sicknesses claims are not payable.

During the twelve (12) month waiting period, if conditions or symptoms of luxating patella begin to emerge, it will be considered a pre-existing condition and will no longer be covered by Aon Happy Tails. For Shermaine’s case, since luxating patella is already an existing condition for Dexter, it would not be covered under her purchase of Aon Happy Tails pet insurance!

For more information, you can also check out their dedicated online portal which helps pet parents obtain a library of pet-related information, as well as ensure their sign up process is smooth and easy to access. You can also access their pricing plans via their website. Simply enter your details and get a quote!

With Aon Happy Tails, rest assured your pet is in safe hands.

How to plan a pet-friendly wedding in Singapore

So I officially got married on 17 October!

If you live in Singapore, you would know that we are not exactly the best when it comes to available pet-friendly venues. As a crazy #dogmum, I wanted Milky to be part of this important milestone since he is part of our family.

1. DECIDE ON A VENUE

Open Farm Community has a lawn for couple to walk down during the ceremony

For us, it was pretty clear that Open Farm Community would be one of our top choice since we have been there before with Milky. We love the food, the servers were really nice to Milky and simply put, we like the place.

It was also an easy choice since we don’t have too much options out there, especially since Milky is considered a large dog and most places (even pet-friendly ones) are not excited about bigger doggo 🙁

Some Important things to check also include:

  • Where can your dog sit / be at during dinner?
  • Would it be too warm, especially for double-coated dogs?

We spoke to the wedding coordinator from Open Farm and confirmed that there will be 4 portable air-con units placed around the dining area (even though it’s outdoor).

TDLR; Visit the restaurant with your dog & see if you vibe with the place.

2. MAKE SURE YOUR GUESTS ARE OKAY WITH DOGS

Milky & Tay waiting at the end of the lawn

We created a Facebook event and invited our guests from there – we made it very clear that Milky will be present on the day and if anyone is uncomfortable, they would (unfortunately) have to un-invite themselves since we weren’t budging on anything lesser.

3. ON-THE-DAY LOGISTICS

Thank you @furriesferry!

(a) Transportation

We knew that it was going to be a super hectic day, so we arranged for Furries Ferry to transport Milky to & fro from the venue. Andrea & team were super friendly and responsive via Whatsapp – highly recommend their service!

Between Hillview <> Open Farm Community, we paid $30 in total for both trips.

(b) Person-in-charge

Assign one of your friend to be the person-in-charge of taking care of the dog. You and your partner are going to be super busy on that day, so it’s important someone is there to take care of your furkid (especially if s(he) is a big dog and needs a bit of space)!

You will need to entertain your guests & making sure everyone is still enjoying themselves, so be sure there’s someone who can help you on that.

(c) Don’t forget food and toilet break

Don’t forget his food! When we were eating, Milky was drooling on the side (even though he had his meal earlier that day). We also brought him out for his twice-a-day walks but still got someone to walk him around every now and then as he doesn’t like to be leashed up.

Also make sure that your dog is good with strangers, loud noises / crowd and always has a bowl of water to quench his/her thirst.

For Milky, we made sure that there are portable air-cons around so that he doesn’t feel too warm.

Henlo, it’s time for belly rubs

4. HAVE LOTS OF FUN

Have lots of fun! It can be a little tough to coordinate around, especially if your dog is large and you cannot just pop them on your leg and carry them around.

But it’s all worth it – I’m not sure if Milky had as much fun as us hee hee, but he sure looks happy in all the photos!

Henlo, I’m Milky and I’m a good boy
Milky getting all the attention from everyone
Milky posing like the supermodel he is
Milky tired liao + 80% drunk husbando

Hope this article has been helpful for anyone thinking to host your wedding with your furkids! x

4 Simple Dog Treat Recipes To Make For Your Furkid + DIY Barkday Cake!

In today’s article, I’ll be sharing easy treats recipes and DIY Birthday cake for your furkid!

Disclaimer: I am not a professional. This article is written based on personal experience in making these treats.

If you’ve never done your own dog treats before I suggest starting with one of the dog recipes in the list below. In fact, I would recommend these recipes to everyone.  Who doesn’t love simple?

These basic dog recipes are easy to produce, even to beginner cooks like me. And if your treats don’t turn out to be as pretty as the pictures below, don’t worry — your dog will just enjoy them the same way.

Here’s some simple dog treat recipes are are made from human-grade ingredients and frozen choices, to DIYs. Owners can eat it too !

1. Quick & Easy Peanut Butter Treats

Does your dog love peanut butter as much as mine does?

LOL – over heated. try n error yourself.

Ingredients – 2cups flour, 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter or powdered (dog-friendly ones), 1/4 cup water.

Homemade Peanut Butter.

Preheat your oven to 350 F. Mix the ingredients together until combined, and then add water until it becomes wet enough to roll out as dough.

Two ingredient dog treats: about 10 minute cook time at about 150 – 180 degree.

2. Frozen Yogurt Apple/Banana/Blueberry/Strawberry Dog Treats

This dog treat recipe is so simple it doesn’t even involve any cooking.

Ingredients – 2apples/banana/blueburry/Strawberry, a cup of plain yogurt/kefir n some ice cubes trays or mould.

*Recommend you to get Farmers Union Greek Style Yoghurt – Natural

You’ve got yourself a yummy treat your dog will love. My dogs Snowy&Bella absolutely loves these treats.

Freeze for a couple hours.

You can also mix n match, your own innovation!

3. Yogurt Apple/Banana/Blueberry/Strawberry Dog Treats – eat on the spot !

This dog treat recipe is excetly same as frozen treat above but without freezing it.

Ingredients – sliced apples/banana/blueburry/Strawberry and a cup of plain yogurt/kefir. Additional ingredients Manuka Honey.

Pour the yogurt into the bowl, decorate with the fruits and serve it to your furkids ! Add a little of raw Manuka honey if you want to !

4. Pumpkin Cookie Dog Treats.

These pumpkin dog treats are mega simple. They’re made with whole wheat flour, though you’re certainly welcome to use all purpose. Whole wheat flour just tends to carry a bit more nutritional value. Pump up the health value of those treats!

Ingredients – 2 cups + 2 Tablespoons whole wheat flour all purpose is fine, 1/2 Tablespoon baking powder, 1/2 cup pumpkin purée, 1/4 cup water or milk, 1 large egg.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350ºF.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and baking powder.
  3. Set aside.
  4. In a medium size bowl, whisk together the pumpkin, water or milk, and egg until smooth.
  5. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix gently until everything is combined. You may need to use your hands. /roll out dough onto a floured surface and use desired shape cookie cutter, reroll, and cut again until there is no more dough left.
  6. Bake dog treats for 30 minutes, flipping treats over halfway through baking.

ingredient dog treats: 30 minute cook time. Store dog treats covered at room temperature. Treats may be frozen, up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature.

DIY Doggie Mooncakes

Mid-Autumn Festival will be upon us soon. What better way to celebrate the occasion than to enjoy some mooncakes and tea (non-caffeinated) together with our furry pals?

Here’s an easy DIY doggie mooncake recipe that I’d like to share today. In this recipe, I featured two flavours – salmon pumpkin and cheesy chicken. Feel free to customise the mooncakes with your furkid’s favourite fillings. Think other proteins, different seasonings, chopped up meat jerkies, fruit puree or even durian if you’re feeling indulgent.

You’ll need:

  • 350g Sweet potatoes
  • 50g Pumpkin
  • 80g Salmon
  • 80g Chicken fillet
  • Mozzerella cheese
  • Mooncake mould
  • Weighing scale

Makes approximately 10 mini mooncakes. To be consumed as a treat or as part of a balanced diet.

Step by step instructions

  1. Peel and wash the sweet potatoes. Cut into cubes.
  2. Wash and de-skin the pumpkin. Cut into cubes.
  3. Steam the sweet potatoes and pumpkin on high heat for around 15 minutes, till soft. Alternatively you may choose to boil them.
  4. Remove from heat and mash them separately. Set aside for use later. The sweet potato would be your mooncake ‘skin’.
  5. Pan fry the salmon and chicken fillet till fully cooked. Add a drizzle of coconut oil for added fragrance (optional). You may also choose to boil or bake the proteins.
  6. Chop the salmon and chicken into smaller pieces. These will be your mooncake filling.
  7. Weigh out the ingredients according to the volume of your mooncake mould. The skin to filling ratio is approximately 3:1. For a 40g mooncake, I used 30g of sweet potatoes for the ‘skin’ and 10g of salmon and pumpkin combined. Likewise for the other flavour, I used 10g of chicken and cheese combined.
  8. Flatten the sweet potato into a disc shape with your palm. Place the filling in the middle of the ‘skin’ and carefully wrap it up. Shape into a compact ball. If there are cracks or the filling is spilling out, reduce the amount of filling slightly.
  9. Shape the mooncake using your preferred mooncake mould and you’re done!

Notes:

  • You may use other types of sweet potatoes for the ‘skin’ – the orange or yellow ones. Regular potatoes work as well. For more colour variants, you may also colour the potatoes with natural food colourings eg. beets for red, turmeric for mustard, spinach juice for green etc.
  • Pumpkin tend to be more moist and sticky when mashed, hence it’s not suitable to be used as the ‘skin’. You can try mixing in some flour if you prefer to use pumpkin for the ‘skin’.
  • I used the old-school wooden mooncake mould which takes a little more effort to get the mooncakes out. You may brush the mould with a little bit of oil or dust with some flour to make the removal easier. The plunger style type of mould would be more convenient.
  • Less is more when it comes to the fillings. The sweet potato ‘skin’ is drier, more crumbly and less stretchy compared to a real dough. You may find it challenging to form a compact ball if you put too much fillings in.

Ending off with a quick visual summary of the recipe.

How to plan a great barkday pawty for your dog

We planned a birthday party for Milky back in July to celebrate his 2nd barkday & recovery from his entropion surgeries.

Planning a party for your doggo can be TOUGH. But since I’ve done this already, I’m going to detail my checklist here to make things as easy for you as possible! Here we go ?

Let the planning begin!

1. DETERMINE YOUR BUDGET

For us, we decided to co-host a birthday party with another Chow Chow owner whose dog’s birthday was the same month as Milky. Your budget will go towards:

Location – any min. spending mandated by the cafe?

Decoration – are you decorating the cafe?

Food – are you buying food for your guests, both humans and dogs?

Goodie bags – are you preparing door gifts for your guests?

Cake – birthday cakes for your dog?

For us, our budget was to spend below $200. This means that we can’t choose a location that has a min. spending.

Since I am co-hosting with another owner, I did up an excel sheet to keep things clear and transparent. You can use my template here!

You can duplicate the excel sheet to your own google drive here

2. DECIDING ON A LOCATION

We don’t drive, so we wanted somewhere nearer to home (west) for easy transportation. We shortlisted Turf Club since it was along Bt Timah and had a few pet-friendly cafes there, namely WOOFTOPIA & AH B CAFE.

Eventually, we settled on Wooftopia because I’ve been there before and since we would be inviting quite a few big dogs, we wanted a larger place. I also liked that they do not have a min.spend, but reserved the tables for us.

They have 2 areas – so the large dogs (Chow Chow) were kept inside that area whereas the other smaller dogs roam at the outer area.

This is how the outside seating looks like (source: google)

? Tips!

  • Use the FAVE app for cashback. Get cashback when you pay via the app. Just a note that the cashback can only be redeemed on your next purchase, so what you can do is to order separately.
  • If possible, celebrate on a weekday. The last I was there, they were running a 30% discount off their mains if you go on a weekday. It was really empty so I guess these promotions might help to pull in some crowd!

3. PLANNING GOODIE BAGS

The fun part – because who doesn’t love buying stuff for our pets? ? But it can be a logistics nightmare if your guests are on different diets and/or has allergies on certain protein.

(a) Do up a google sheet and get your guests to fill it in.

(b) Plan your shopping! I was on a budget so I hopped onto Fave (no, this article is not sponsored by them haha) and bought the $30 Perromart voucher for $10 … and used another email address since it’s only for new customers (I realised they increased it to $20; it was $10 when I bought it).

I bought Absolute Holistic treats and also got some dental treats from Happy Doggi (btw, Woof Agency do sponsor treats for goodie bags. You can sign up here).

(c) I bought these Kraft Paper Bag Ziplock Resealable Bags & Brown Kraft Paper Bags from Shopee. Total cost was around $12 after using my shopee coins – I packed for 20 – 25 dogs if I am not wrong.

Zanel (the other owner) was in-charge of decoration and cake! The balloons were around $15, but the cake was pricier ($95). We got it from Onicupcakes, who is also a friend and fellow Chow Chow owner!

You can see the decoration on the wall (just balloons for Milky & Rug’s name!)

4. HAVE FUN & TAKE LOTS OF PICS!

It’s very fun, but also SUPER tiring. Just imagine it as a kid’s birthday party and you need to make sure everyone is playing nice (whilst not peeing & pooping) and your human guests are having fun.

I would highly recommend that you have another person to help around, and invite peeps who know each other so that they won’t be too bored alone!

(Left to right) Nugget, Milky, Maki, Kawaii & Bun Bun
Family photo with our little boy
Some behind-the-scenes with the cake and trying to get a good photo (VERY HARD)
Let the celebration begin!

Planning a barkday party is both fun and tiring. But what I really love is the smile, laughter and running after your pets that makes everything worth it.

Just look at the boy with all his birthday presents – how blessed is he! ❤️

Milky with all his birthday gifts – what a lucky boy!

A huge thanks to everyone who attended Milky’s birthday party and being part of his life. It’s not easy being a pet parent, but the community and friendship makes everything better.

Have fun planning! xoxo

Sleeping after a long day of celebration; till the next pawty! x
