How to Choose the Right Dog Breed

This article was brought to you by Julia from Dogsplanet

Getting a dog is always exciting: you can already imagine all the fun you are going to have— and they haven’t even arrived yet!

But before you return to those imagined scenes of fetch, let’s take a minute to decide which dog breed you should open your heart and home to.

There are several factors to consider before getting a dog to ensure that both your new pup and your family can get along well, and are the best possible companions for each other.

Here are the questions you need to ask yourself that will help you reach your conclusive decision:

Where Do You Live?

Contrary to popular belief, the size of your home does not directly correspond with the size of dog you should get. Some large dog breeds, like Great Danes and Saint Bernards, will be perfectly happy living in an apartment, as they mostly just want to lie on the sofa next to you and cuddle.

There are also small dog breeds that are nothing short of a dynamo, who will need a lot of space to run around, and who will do laps around your tiny flat. Practically all terriers are like that.

What you do want to consider is if you have a backyard. Breeds like the German Shepherd and the Boxer will absolutely need one, for example. If you live somewhere pretty isolated, you might also want to consider a guard dog breed that will also provide some added protection to your family.

Factor in the climate as well. Thick-coated Malamutes and Huskies won’t exactly be thrilled to live in the tropics.

How vocal the dog breed tends to be is an important consideration as well. You don’t want the neighbors to go nuts, so maybe a Frenchie will be the right pup for your living arrangements.

How Active and Busy Are You?

The dog you choose should be your perfect match in terms of energy levels and lifestyle. If you like to hike, your dog should be able to keep up with you. If you prefer to spend your days at the beach, you want a breed that loves the water.

Be very honest with yourself when assessing your activity levels and the time you have to spend with your dog. Don’t just promise yourself you will go on longer walks and exercise more. If you have never been much of a fitness fanatic, having a dog probably won’t change you. In fact, having to get up early in the morning to walk them may just get on your nerves.

If you have more of a laidback and low-activity kind of family, consider getting an English Bulldog, a Basset Hound or a Boston Terrier. All of these breeds have their distinct personalities, but don’t require that much physical activity.

If you have an active type of family, you can share your home with a Labrador, an Australian Shepherd or a Border Collie.

Are There Young Children in Your Family?

Photo by Julissa Helmuth from Pexels

Certain dog breeds are great companions for young children, and they can certainly become the life and soul of the entire family unit. If you are looking for a pet that will be patient with your youngsters and let them play dress-up and have tea parties, look no further than Golden Retrievers.

However, make sure to also consider the amount of work the new pet will require, and how much the kids will be able to chip in. Owning a dog is certainly an amazing way to teach the kids responsibility and empathy, as long as you are realistic about the amount of help they can lend.

Before bringing the dog home, make sure to ask about their personality and temperament. While most purebred dogs will behave true to breed, some pups will be a bit more stubborn, or a little bit more anxious than you may have hoped for.

Do You Have Any Allergies?

If you or any member of your household suffers from allergies, you will need to choose your dog very carefully. Hypoallergenic breeds are a thing, but even these dogs can cause an unwanted and unexpected reaction, so spend some time around them before you decide to get one.

The Bichon Frise, Coton de Tulear and Poodle are all good choices if you suffer from allergies. They are also on the smaller side, so you will be able to care for them in a small apartment too, as they don’t require a yard.

Be mindful of the way the coats of these dogs need to be cared for. The Poodle for example requires plenty of brushing and regular trips to the groomer, so make sure you are ready to set aside the time.

Have You Owned a Dog Before?

Finally, you want to consider the amount of training and attention your new pet will need. Some breeds are notoriously hard to train and can be extremely stubborn. The Basset Hound, while great with kids, is also a very independent dog, and will require a lot of patience when training, for example.

Other breeds, like the Corgi, will require a lot of activity and work, if you don’t want them to start herding you. They are not at all difficult to train, and are considered one of the smartest breeds, but if left to their own devices, they will likely come up with an activity you are not a fan of.

If you have owned dogs before, and if you know how to teach a pup both the basic commands and some more complex tricks, you should essentially be fine with most breeds.

If this is your first time owning a dog, you may want to consider a breed like the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, the English Springer Spaniel, or even the Labrador. Border Collies and German Shepherds can also be a great choice, especially if you are looking for a dog that will love to spend time outdoors and be active.

Wrapping It Up

Finding the right dog breed for your family and lifestyle will require a bit of research and time. However, you will be thankful you did it, once your new pet arrives home and slots right into your day-to-day life, just like you hoped they would.

Aon’s Happy Tails: Lexi.the.spitz

Our pawpals only as much as a quarter of our hooman lifespans. In the short amount of time that they spend with us, we as pawrents would want them to live with minimal discomfort. That is the ethos that Alvina, pawmom of her Japanese Spitz Lexi, hopes to carry.

Alvina works in the IT industry and has made the switch to work from home more often to spend time with Lexi. “I felt our time with our dogs are too short,” she said. “Adjusting to a new job isn’t easy, but having a happy pill like Lexi makes it a whole lot better!”

Great with the neighbours

The four-year-old stepped into Alvina’s life looking worse for wear. Lexi was initially introduced as timid and fearful of everything; a quiet dog with prominent tear stains. “We weren’t sure what to expect at first,” said Alvina, “but the Lexi we now know is more curious and bold in exploring the world around her. She loves humans a lot, and though she is not very vocal, she will bark when her guard is up.”

Lexi is a model resident, greeting her neighbours every evening and taking notice of the hoomans she meets on her walks. On occasion, her neighbours would even pop by the house to greet and play with her. With pawpals, she plays with older dogs more, but not so much with high-energy doggos.

Foodie but also a cutie

“Beyond belly rubs, butt taps, and more love from hoomans, Lexi also enjoys her walks!” Alvina explains. Lexi knows when a walk is happening (Alvina getting her stuff and wearing her mask is a good cue) and will wind up excitedly for it. “Her favourite words are “Let’s go!” and she goes crazy once I pick up the leash!”

In their free time, Alvina also enjoys running through dog tricks with Lexi. The food-driven doggo loves all kinds of food, but Lexi has taken her love a step further — Alvina has realised that Lexi can identify the words “cheese” and “banana”. “Our cheese slices and bananas are always missing a small corner, but who can resist those eyes of hers?”

Hope for a pain-free life

“My biggest fear is her health problems that will come as she grows older,” says Alvina. Japanese Spitzs have a higher risk of developing Luxating Patella (LP), a condition in which their kneecaps dislocates from their normal position. In an effort to give Lexi a pain-free life, Alvina has begun incorporating supplements into her diet.

The underlying concern that pawrents like Alvina face has always been the cost of surgeries. Without proper financial planning, medical care for one’s furbabies can end up at an unmanageable cost. “I heard about the high costs of surgery and vet expenditure, especially when pets developed more ailments with age,” she said.

Alvina believes pet owners should never have to be put in a situation where they had to weigh the costs of medical treatment, which is why she placed pet insurance as an immediate priority when she first heard of its inception. “Pet insurance became an immediate priority when I realised they existed. If we need health insurance, why not our pets?” she said. “The few hundreds you spend on the insurance is only the cost of a vacation at a nearby country. The unconditional love that they give back is truly priceless!”

*Bonus Content*

Say Lexi could speak hooman for 7 days. What would you say to her for that week?

“I’d ask her what are the things she likes/dislikes, things she’d like more of, and what she loves about being in this family. I’d keep talking to her like you would with your best friend. I’ll ask why she barks incessantly at my dad every night, and why she pees on the bathroom rug in the kitchen. Although I’m not sure how talkative she would be, seeing how few sounds she makes compared to other dogs… maybe she’s more of a listener?”

An Animal Communicator Told Me Gypsie Thinks She’s My Human Child!

This article was written by Liang May. Sign up to be a contributor on Pawjourr here and have your content shared!

Have you heard of an Animal Communicator? Apparently, they have the ability to understand animals when they listen intently. We were curious and would like to understand Gypsie a little more. That is when we decided to ask an Animal Communicator for assistance.

Yi Lin will answer questions owners would like to know about their pets and translate that to us from her visions. All she asked was a recent full-body shot of Gypsie.

I sent her this.

The first message she received from Gyps from this photograph was that “Gyspie felt cold”. When this was communicated to us, Meyer turned around to look at Gypsie, “Hmmm? Are you cold?” To our amazement, Gypsie, who was lying down on the floor behind him, looked up and responded with a whimper as if vocalising her thoughts! In a manner that we had never heard before! Gypsie stood up excitedly and wagged her tail, as if surprised to hear we understood her. Well, I do not know if she was really cold but when I don on my clothes on her, she did not disagree with it.

How do we know if Yi Lin did not just assume Gypsie was cold from seeing how unusually short-coated Gyps was in the photo on that really cold day?

We listened to more of what she found out from Gypsie based on the questions we had.

1. How does she feel when dogs she doesn’t know come into her line of sight during her walks?

2. How does she feel when we leave her alone at home?

3. What makes her happy or sad?

1. How does she feel when dogs she doesn’t know come in sight during her walks?

“Seems like she is well-behaved, like a kid who asks permission from daddy and mommy before she goes and play. Then again, she feels that real playing is with her siblings, Ewan and Faye. Otherwise, she is not very interested. She will want her siblings to join in her play together, especially your daughter. She’s more of the “Let’s do things together as siblings” attitude! Very attached and also sees herself as a human child in the family. She feels neglected when she is not involved in the kids’ activities.”

You know what? She always wants to be involved in Ewan and Faye’s play.
When they play ball, she wants to play too but we don’t let her because she doesn’t know the rules. She would hoard the ball and run away with it. Other times, she would chase them for the ball and nip them to win the ball over. Her nips are akin to bites and when excited, they hurt!
On other occasions when the kids are playing water in their swimwear at the patio, we would lock the door and keep her out. Well! I don’t want her to get wet and then spend an hour drying/dematting her! Every time, she would scratch the door, bark at them to let her play and whimper when she wasn’t allowed to join them. Awww….

I vividly recall a Dog Run visit at West Coast with Ewan, Faye and three of their cousins. We brought all five human kids and her to the Dog Run! She was ecstatic! There were dogs in the Run, her human siblings were in the Run but there was one problem. It was extremely muddy. The five kids got themselves dirty and hurried out of the Dog Run to find a toilet to wash up. They were in there for just 5 minutes! Instead of playing with the other dogs, Gypsie dashed after her humans! She in the inside and them walking on the outside, separated by the fence. She was confused, she was barking and whimpering. She was telling us, “I WANT TO GO WITH THEM!”

Meyer and I told her to go play with her own kind! Ewan and Faye were just going to the toilet and back. As astounded as we were, she did not want to play anymore and kept getting us to open the gate to leave. She must find her human siblings.

That was such an interesting revelation of the kind of dog Gypsie is.
However, she doesn’t really seek permission from us when she meets other dogs on our walks though. In fact, we find her to be ill-behaved *haha* because she would bark and growl at some of them! That’s a growing issue we are working so hard to eradicate. Our trainer is certain the reason why she is selective to certain dogs is because of a bad experience in her past; that she is protecting herself by barking at them and willing them to go away.

2. How does she feel when we leave her alone at home?

“If you leave her at home, she gets upset. She lies there, looking out at the balcony so sadly. Her last message to you is, “Mommy, bring me along.””

We bring Gypsie out every opportunity we could. We would even choose eateries that welcome her little furry existence. Sometimes though we would really want to eat at a restaurant, with air-conditioning. Those times, we have to say goodbye to her.

Her reaction would vary but mostly, she stays home quietly watching us close the main door without retaliation. It felt like she was taking it well each time! Well, if this is true that she forlornly waits for our return by looking out sadly into the “not so far horizon”, we will try to leave her alone as little as we can.

3. What makes her happy or sad?

“What makes her happy? She showed me a scene of her licking your face. What makes her sad? When she cannot be involved in activities with the family.”

My face is the most licked in the family for sure! Both paws on my shoulders like a neck hug and saliva all over from my ears to forehead, nose, cheeks and lips! *ahhaha * neck too.

Many would probably look at these answers with a sense of doubt. Can humans really understand animals? Through a picture? They can ask animal questions?

I took a chance to interview Yi Lin with some burning questions. Read the full disclosure in my blogpost!

Petscaping: 4 Tips to Give Your Pet the Perfect Outdoor Play Area

This article was written by Sarah Hollenbeck from Siege Media.

Once you get a pet, you may notice that certain things in your life start to change. You might find yourself searching for fun things to do with your pet, getting outside more, or just in a happier mood.

Many pet owners may also start making changes to their homes to better suit their pet’s needs. Some people may even pet-proof their homes for pet-friendly living

This effort doesn’t always stop inside the home as pet owners also want to treat their pets to a fun and safe outdoor environment. You can achieve this by petscaping your yard.

The art of petscaping

Petscaping is the practice of creating a safe outdoor environment for your pet to play and relax in. These changes to your outdoor space can be as minimal or creative as you want them to be.

Whether you are removing any toxic plants or adding fun toys for your pet to enjoy, petscaping is a great way to add enjoyment to your pet’s everyday life.

4 fun tips for petscaping your yard

Continue reading to discover fun ways to turn your yard into the perfect pet play area!

1. Create a pet-friendly layout

Before you make any changes to your outdoor space, it is important to consider the layout that you want to achieve. This can be specific to your pet and its unique traits.

If you have an energetic pup, you will want to leave a large space for them to play and run around in. If you have a cat that loves sleeping in the sun, be sure to leave them a sunny spot for lounging.

2. Use durable materials

As you know, having a pet can lead to some occasional wear and tear on things around the house. The same goes for your outdoor space. Highly trafficked walkways can become torn up over time, especially if you have a larger pet.

To prevent this, you can use these pet-friendly materials:

  • Concrete
  • Masonry
  • Paver stones
  • Pebbles

If there are certain areas that you would like to keep off-limits for your pet, consider using wooden, metal, or wire fencing.

3. Add safe plants and flowers

Whether you have the space for a garden or would like to add some potted plants, be sure to only use plants that are safe for your pet.

Plants that are dangerous to your pet include:

  • Foxglove
  • Elephant ears
  • Ivy
  • Snake plant

If you have any of these plants in your yard, be sure to remove them immediately.

Instead, plant these safe alternatives:

  • Sunflowers
  • Gerbera daisies
  • Roses
  • Bermuda grass

By ensuring that there are no toxic plants in your yard, you can sit back and relax while your pets explore and have fun.

4. Add entertaining features

Most pets long for the opportunity to go outside. By including these fun additions, you are sure to have a yard that will keep your pet occupied for hours of playtime.

Fun backyard additions include:

  • An agility/obstacle course
  • A small swimming pool or splash pad
  • A multi-level cat tree
  • A pet house
  • An enclosed catio
  • A sandbox

Don’t have the space for any of these? No problem! Instead, add some of your pet’s favorite toys to keep them entertained.

Protecting your new outdoor space

Now that you and your pet can enjoy the perfect outdoor space, your home insurance policy is probably the last thing you are thinking about. By informing your home insurance provider of any changes you have made to your property, you can ensure your hard work is protected.

That way, if a bad storm destroys your new pet house or splash pad, you can get the help you need. Now that everything is protected, you and your furry friend can enjoy the outdoors together for many years to come.

Aon’s Happy Tales: @classy.cleopura

Singapore Specials are a breed of their own — pointed ears or floppy ears; shorthair or fluffy, big or small, black, white, brindle or brown… these dogs look a little bit like every dog. Shef, proud pawrent of Singapore Special Cleo, (@classy.cleopura on IG), proves that these lovely strays are worth every bit of effort put into training them, and making them pawfect urban companions.

Cleo is in Shef’s words, “the chillest and goodest dog ever (no bias!).” Cleo is extremely treat-and-food motivated and often ‘smiles’ for treats, a trait that Shef makes full use of to take more photos of her doggo.

Cleo shares her pawrent’s social energy and loves hosting friends, both pawpal and pawrent. “It lets us both be lazy and sociable at the same time. Cleo really is my spirit animal!”

Story of Cleo and Shef

Cleo and Shef

Before being a part of Shef’s family, Cleo spent her early years living as a stray in a cemetery. She was  rescued by Action for Singapore Dogs (ASD) when she was around six years old. Due to her age and size — being middle-aged and not of the HDB-approved size — Cleo spent another 13 months in the shelter, without being adopted.

“When I was going through the adoption process, my adoption counsellor at ASD told me that Cleo is one of the easiest dogs they’ve  had at the shelter.” I was given lots of handholding through the initial homestay, and even after I finalized her adoption, they were still very willing to provide guidance and support.” Thankfully, Shef and Cleo are a match made in heaven.

“She was initially a little cautious when she came to me (understandably so), but now she’s happy just hanging around the house with me; napping, interrupting my work calls for the occasional head rub and reminding me when I’m five minutes late to feed her.”

“She loves her long slow walks but is extremely scared of cyclists and has thunder anxiety, so storms are traumatic for both of us,” says Shef.

In their free time, Cleo would explore the neighbourhood HDBs and greet the community cats.

Getting an older dog

Being at the right place, at the right time

Having grown up with a German Shepherd, Shef always knew she’d eventually welcome a furry friend into her life… “I moved overseas for work in 2015 and moved back to Singapore in 2020, straight into the pandemic.” Shef recounted. “I used to travel a lot Pre-Covid so getting a dog was a consideration that was put on hold. Once lockdown began and I settled in Singapore, it felt like an opportune moment to adopt a dog.”

Lifestyle changes

While Shef enjoyed travelling and scuba diving, she is laidback. So when the time came for her to decide on the kind of pawpal she wanted in her life, her mind had already formed a clear image.

“I was clear I didn’t want a puppy as my first pet — I’m not emotionally ready for a 12-15 year commitment at this stage of my life, nor do I really want to deal with teething, toilet training, etc.  I was keen on dogs in the 4-7 year range, preferably of the low-energy variety; given my not-so-active lifestyle,” reveals Shef, regarding her thought process and criteria, while adopting Cleo.

Many new pawrents underestimate the difficulty in raising young cats or dogs and tend to struggle with managing their diet, health, and training. Experienced pet owners advise all new/to-be owners to do as much reading as possible on what works best for them, their pawpals, so that they can adapt and integrate the new furry companion into their lifestyle as seamlessly as possible

Adopt, don’t shop

As a first-time dog owner, Shef was not confident in her ability to identify an ethical breeder. “I wasn’t keen on buying a dog from a pet shop, and I was more inclined to adopt from a shelter since my grandma used to volunteer at a children’s orphanage and I’ve heard so many fulfilling tales of adoption from her,” says Shef.

A pedigree pup in Singapore can cost around SGD$10,000 depending on breed and breeder. “If I had to spend that much money, I’d rather spend it on spoiling my dog silly,” exclaims Shef.

Concerns over genetics

“I do worry about Cleo’s long term health,” says Shef.  “Given her history, I have no idea about any genetic predispositions or any other health issues I should be mindful of.” As Singapore Specials are the product of generations of strays cross-breeding, they are less susceptible to diseases. However, the ambiguity over their ancestry leaves room for worry over congenital and hereditary conditions.

Insure to ensure

Cleo was taken for a full check-up and blood test upon adoption.  “Given Cleo’s age and the lack of medical history, I wanted to get insurance for her, in case it was ever needed (and I really hope I never need to claim against it).

Most of Singapore’s pet insurance caters to puppies rather than middle-aged dogs. Additionally, some have specific age limitations,  rendering their coverage ineffective once your pawpal passes a certain age. This might pose a problem for Cleo, whose age is estimated based on veterinary assessments.

“Happy Tails was frankly one of two options Cleo was eligible for, and this is the only one that covers her for her entire lifetime. The coverage offered is also reasonable and comprehensive, for the amount I needed to pay.” [Shef.]

Aon Happy Tails offers an affordable premium as low as $24 a month for coverage that includes surgical treatment arising from injuries, sicknesses, specified genetic conditions and much more.

Shef strongly believes pet owners should insure their pets. “ I hope you never need to claim against it, but in my experience, it is Murphy’s law. The one and only time I didn’t take travel insurance was the one time I really needed it!”

*Bonus Content*

Say Cleo could speak hooman for 7 days. What would you say to her / do with her for that one week?

“I had an AC (animal communicator) speak with Cleo recently to try to understand her better. If she could speak hooman though, I would pretty much tell her what I already do every day – how much I love her and what a good girl she is, and how glad I am that she waited to be adopted by me!”

“I don’t think much would change for us from our current lifestyle — we would still hang out, maybe explore some new neighbourhoods in Singapore. Maybe I would take her back to the cemetery she grew up in to explore (if she really wanted to). I would love to know more about her past life from her. I have some old photos and anecdotal stories from her feeders and rescuers which are priceless, but it would be amazing to hear her version of her life too.”

“I’d love to also talk to her more about her health, any aches and pains she might have, and explain to her why she needs to diet (her and me both!).”

Making (Sponsored) Videos

Congratulations on scoring that pet job! You’ve followed our tips on content creation for apps, content ideas to engage your audience, and now you’re confident to partner with a brand to promote their products. How will you be promoting them to your followers, though? There are a few methods, so let’s look at five ways to make sponsored videos!

On Brands

Character

More often than not, brands — and by extension, their products — carry a tone that they would like to convey. Pet toys brands, for instance, are warm and enthusiastic to mirror the joy your pawpal can get from playing with them. You can see a brand’s character through various methods, namely their website, social media accounts, and product packaging design, if any. If you have trouble finding the right tone to help promote the brand/product, it’s always good to start by emulating their character.

Credibility

Credibility can be split into two forms: heritage, and reviews. Brands and products that have stood the test of time and remained relevant are seen as reliable and trustworthy. Pet Lovers Centre, established in 1973, remains a household brand synonymous with pet ownership. For new brands that do not have the luxury of heritage, it’ll be better to look at their consumer reviews to promote them to your followers.

Benefits and Unique Selling Point (USP)

When looking at a product, service, or brand in its entirety, what draws consumers to purchase them are their benefits and USPs. Benefits tend to be physical and tangible, e.g. “X-Supplements are made with 100% natural ingredients and are perfectly healthy for your pawpal”. On the other hand, USPs can be tangible or intangible, e.g. “Be the hero your dog deserves”. Knowing these will help to influence if you want to do a Tactical Review or a Creative Integration.

Tactical Reviews

1. Product Testimonials

Product Testimonials take a straightforward approach to the promotion. Without going too deep into functions and technicalities, these videos are generally shorter and summarised so viewers can understand the benefits and visit the product site without scrolling away.

2. Product Breakdown

Centred on benefits and functions, product breakdowns are the most technical of the three. Product Breakdowns tend to be longer and more insightful, and aimed at your more interested followers who might have already heard of the products know more about the product. However, because of that, you might stand to lose out on casual followers who are just scrolling through their feed.

3. Product Demonstration

Product Demonstrations are the most engaging of the three. Let your pawpal try the product — be it toys or food — to give your followers a visual representation of how the product works. By showing more and telling less, viewers can immediately see the benefits and features in action, so it entices them to want to know more.

Creative Integration

4. Selling a concept

Instead of doing the direct approach and telling your followers what’s good about a product, you can do a conceptual video that shows your followers how this product changes your pawpal’s life. This works especially well when promoting an entire brand. Ruffwear’s “Becoming” video shows viewers the products for sale but talks about none of it. Instead, the narrator talks about their philosophy, mission, and vision. Similarly, you can film a sketch to show your pet will a transformed lifestyle thanks to this brand or product you are using.

5. Production, Process, BTS

Much better if you are advertising for your own new release of products, as the process is not something your partnered brand would show you. If you do decide to release your own products, say, home-baked pet treats, you could show a video of you choosing the ingredients (to indicate quality/freshness), the baking process (to emphasise it being homemade), and arrange the food on a nice set-up for presentation (allows followers to imagine how it could look for their pawpal).

Now that you know…

More often than not, the type of video you will make also depends on the requests of your partner when you take up pet jobs. However, for pet jobs with more creative freedom, you will have a better understanding of how you can promote the brand and its products to your followers!

Ten TikTok Talents To Tune in To

TikTok’s users number in the millions, and each of them has the ability to do wondrous things with the challenges, sounds, and prompts they can find through the app’s community-driven algorithm. We have our own TikTok account too, filled with interesting comedy skits about our staff and resident doggos. So follow us, and these 10 TikTok accounts that will inspire you to make more content with your pawpals!

1. Lifewithkleekai

The daily lives of two Alaskan Klee Kais are loaded with comedy when their pawrents are always finding new ways to tease them. Skye (black and white) and Copper (brown) show a wide range of emotions in their videos and are sure to inspire you to try various prompts with your pawpal. Follow their Youtube channel for longer videos that include petcare for the relatively rare breed!

2. Corgidailylife

Corgidailylife effectively demonstrates the height of TikTok content creation in various ways:

  1. Education/Guides – Without channel goes through various dog care tips and tricks to promote good dog hygiene.
  2. Sound – A microphone is placed dead centre to where the action is — paw-scrubbing, fur-brushing, (Corgi-snoring?) etc. to give viewers an audial treat. Well, it’s not ASMR, but it’s as good as ASMR.
  3. Timing – And especially, comedic timing. Each dog care video begins with the pawrent dragging the apathetic corgi across the screen to begin the routine. By the end of it, the doggo is left satisfied, and the viewers can tell by how it sleeps ‘soundfully’.
  4. Content Appeal – Fluffy, chonky, Corgi booty.

7. Whataboutbunny

Alexis Devine puts to rest the age-old question, “What if my dog could talk?” Meet Bunny, a Sheepadoodle that has learned the English language — well, sort of. Using a soundboard of associative keywords, Bunny has learnt to speak hooman to communicate with Alexis, with varying degrees of accuracy. To all Pokemon fans: If Bunny could learn hooman, perhaps one day, your pawpal could be like Meowth too.

8. My_aussie_gal

It’s no secret that Mary and Secret are best friends. The Australian Shepard does everything with her hooman — be it music, laundry, or even yoga. Having a pawpal that shares the same vibes as you means your hobbies are twice as fun!

9. Scottyhubs

Scott Hubbard shows off what could possibly be the world’s chill-est and sexiest Chihuahua, Gracie. Scott’s sketches with Gracie always leave viewers in awe of the doggo’s laidback energy, making them wish they had swagger like hers in her thirst trap TikToks.

Timeless Ideas To Kickstart Your TikTok Content

Welcome back to the fifth instalment of our TikTok feature! Today we are going to look at some content you can make with your pawpal, so you won’t run on empty in the ideas department!

Sounds

A lot of TikTok’s content can be defined by the sounds they use, as they easily set the tone for the video. If it’s a commonly used sound or even a sound from a well-known source, chances are you’ll be able to set up some expectations and hook them in. They’ll want to stay and see how the video ends!

Here are some common sounds that pawrents are using on their TikToks:

Holidays

Share how you celebrate the holidays with your pawpals! Holidays, National Events, and Celebrations are all over the calendar. Use this opportunity to share costumes, family practices, or just you and your furry friends enjoying some quality time together.

Vlogs

While all of TikTok is already in video format, you can use the app to share quirky traits about your pet and see if others may have similar experiences. TikTok’s community-driven functionality allows you to duet people’s prompts too, which creates a whole carousel of reactions.

If you’re confident about your knowledge in pet care, or if you’re just enthusiastic about sharing your petcare routines on social media, you’ll be surprised how many people will appreciate it! Beyond entertainment, people do view TikTok as a platform to learn something new, so don’t be shy about sharing the knowledge and experiences you’ve had up till now!

Challenges

According to TikTok, cats love it when you brush their fur with a wet toothbrush; it supposedly reminds them of their mother. And did you know that if you play the iconic screech from the 1960 film “Psycho”, the sound will scare dogs?

It isn’t 100% accurate, but there’s only one way to find out — try it out with your pawpals! Challenges are quick, easy-to-make, and quirky content that you can make together. You’ve probably thought of doing some of these, but always passed it off as outrageous anyway!
