5 Questions with a Stay at Home Mum and Paw-rent to One

For Liang May, @mmlittlee on Instagram, parenting is never easy. She balances work as a Stay-at-Home Mum (SAHM) while taking care of her 1-year-old English sheepdog, Gypsie.

We reached out to learn more about her life, and the challenges she faces. Let’s appreciate the hard work she puts in to take care of her family!

1. Hi there! Tell us more about your family.

We are Meyer, May, Ewan, Faye and Gypsie; An out-going and uncontrollable bunch!

The kids are loud and their parents can be too especially when excited or in disciplinary mode. It’s no wonder the pup has the voice of a loud hailer! She must have been nurtured into it when she became a part of our family a year ago.

We work hard but play harder as a team. Though we do set ground rules, we are also believers in free play.

2. Bring us through a daily life routine at home.

On a regular day, our children hit school and spend six hours away from home. Every morning, we send Ewan and Faye to school as a whole family unit. We never leave Gypsie home alone even if school drop-offs are less than 20 minutes. Gyps patiently waits for us to leash her up for her morning school runs while the children put on their school shoes and bags.

As much as we miss Ewan and Faye when they are off at school, we get to spend quality time as husband and wife. It is especially nice when we detour to a cafe to partake in a leisurely breakfast before starting work [at home]. Plus, our lucky floofy little one gets to bask in the morning sun while we indulge in cappuccino and poached eggs.

The Work From Home [WFM] situation now is really quite a blessing for us and especially for Gypsie. We are hardly away for hours at length and she’s always got one of us home with her giving her belly rubs and playing fetch.

The Welcome Home [From School] ritual from the children and Gypsie is one that is extremely heart-warming to watch. From a distance, I will be able to hear Ewan and Faye squealing “GYPSIE!” as they run home. Gyps will portray her happiness with lots of pounces and licks. No rules here – just go crazy you guys with the Welcome Home!

For the rest of the day, we will go about our routines of school work, work work, relaxation and play. Dear Gypety Gyps will hang loose around us and wait patiently for her next walk!

When it is time to turn down, everyone enters the children’s room too, well, put the children to sleep. Mommy and Daddy will sneak out to enjoy the rest of the night with Gypsie in tow. She will watch Netflix with us, wonder if she could snack on that crunchy salty bowl of snack we dip our hands into, gets combed and has her teeth brushed.

If she is lucky, she’d get a quick midnight walk under the starry sky should her daddy feels up to it!

3. What would you say are the main challenges you experience working as a SAHM mum plus taking care of a furpup?

Oh wow. This is a story to tell. Two weeks after we brought Gypsie home with us, Daddy broke his foot from parkour. He was out of action for months and things were thrown out of proportion from then.

If you’ve never known about the challenges of raising a puppy, allow me to enlighten you. A puppy, like a newborn baby, needs to poo and pee almost every other hour. We had been taking turns to wake up in the middle of the night to bring Gypsie outdoors to do her business.

We decided to not crate-train Gypsie. Remember, we prefer Free Play and that includes “Freedom of Speech”, “Freedom to Live” and “Freedom to Poo and Pee”.

Initially, we thought of training her on a pee pad but quickly decided to have her outdoor trained as she showed a preference to it even as a three-monther. She is after all a large breed and would eventually “grow out of” a pee pad. We also kept in mind how we can cut down on wastes to help our environment, we sacrificed sleep and brought her out [whenever she called] five times a night between 12am to 7am every day for a few months.

The biggest challenge I faced during the time Meyer broke his foot was to single-handedly take care of every toilet runs, walks and feeds. Not to mention two other human rascals who needed help with school work and of course, cooking and feeding the family.

Without a helper at home, it got really draining but I persisted out of love for my family. Eventually, it became a routine and I got used to it.

What can’t break us, makes us stronger!

As soon as Daddy recovered and out of crutches, everyone rejoiced! Having Gypsie is a shared responsibility from everyone at home. With that understanding, life as a paw-family gets a lot more enjoyable. The dog is happy, the children are happy, mommy is happy and then, Daddy will naturally be happy.

4. What motivates you as a paw-rent?

The smiles and health of my children.

Additionally, I also look forward to every outing in the family calendar. When the week gets dreary, I count down to our next beach outing or the next dog run or staycation or anything that frees our minds from any kind of work. But one that involves every single member of our family.

5. What advice would you give to those struggling to balance their duties as a parent and a pet owner?

First of all, embrace the presence of your new Furkid. For us, Gypsie is our baby, our third child. The love for her burgeons and naturally, we struggle less even though the extra commitment is real!

Paw-rents, like parents, guilt trip themselves too when they see other puppies get more than their own. Social media can be a toxic space for comparisons and I must stress, how we should not compare or feel inadequate when judged by others.

To be honest, I felt a little sorry we did not have time to send Gypsie to puppy training when we had her. There were a lot of self-doubts about our paw-renting style and if we were doing it right for our dear puppy Gyps. But I just couldn’t, especially when Daddy had to go into surgery for his foot and the children going to school every day.

We decided to bring Gypsie up like how we bought Ewan and Faye up. There were no baby training schools or manuals to read. We parented them through trial and error and so we shall do the same with Gyps.

She is an extremely clever pupper but there was no time for fancy trick training because I would be knackered by the time I finished grooming her at night. I always say, “It’s her paw-rents who aren’t very clever.” *haha* But in reality, we are stretched with all that we have on our plates. That doesn’t mean we are doing her any less because Gypsie Gypety Gyps Gyps is one happy child. It doesn’t matter if she understands only Sit, Down, Paw, Stay and Let’s Go!

It matters a lot more to her that she is loved.

And that this family of hers loves her so very much.

A big thank you to Liang May for sharing her insight into double pa(w)renting! We are truly impressed by her ability to juggle both work and taking care of her family members.

Finding the ‘best’ cat litter – Part 2

Remember our review 6 months ago? We have some updated reviews!

We use to say that Kit Cat Snow Peas was our favourite litter, however, something about it must have changed! 🙁 When we first used the litter, odour control was good, clumping was good and no ammonia smell. As time passed, the smell got worst and the clumping tightness was greatly reduced.

Following which, we decided it was time to change litter boxes and swop to another brand – Jolly Cat Crushed Tofu Litter. Though there were some things that we did not like such as the tracking, we made the switch because Jolly Cat Crushed Tofu Litter has proven its great odour control, clumping is good and easy to scoop and best thing is that it does not stick to the base of the litter box, making it super mess free when clearing.

Many a times, we would get questions like, really so good? But the tracking…. So what did we tell people?

First of all we would tell people the good stuff, because after tirelessly trying so many brands of litter (i think we tried at least 15-20) and different kinds like tofu, bentonite, corn and pine, Jolly Cat has proven its worth – both price and functionality wise.

When it comes to reducing tracking, what we did was to change out litter boxes to either covered or those higher ones where the cats would have to jump in and out of.

We are currently using CatIdea Cat Ear and Iris Top Entry Litter Boxes. With this we realised that tracking has reduced significantly. To further ensure that tracking was kept to the minimal, we used a litter trapping mat 🙂

Our favourite scent

Amongst the 4 scents, we have so far tried Original, Sakura and Lavender. Our top choice – Lavender!

@_meowtales is back with another cat litter review! This time featuring Jolly Cat

Not only does it not have any ammonia smell when we clean up or after the cats pee, it musks so well that when in a confined room, we would not even know that the cats has pooped as there was no foul smell! The room would also have zero odour be it pee or poo!

If you have not tried Jolly Cat, we recommend that you should and just ignore the fact about tracking cause you are going to love the other benefits that it brings to your household! 🙂

Persistent ear infections? This is how I deal with it-

Dogs with long floppy (droopy) ears have a higher chance of getting ear infections compared to dogs with upright ears. While ear infections are not limited to ear structures, excess hair in the ear canal, wax overproduction, hormonal disorders, allergies and autoimmune diseases also contribute to a higher chance of ear infections.

I will attach a website regarding ear infections for further reading, symptoms and causes for dog ear infections were cited from the same website.

Symptoms of Dog Ear Infections

Some dogs show no symptoms of ear infection aside from a buildup of wax and discharge in the ear canal. But ear infections often cause significant discomfort and affected dogs may show signs such as:

  • Head shaking
  • Scratching at the affected ear
  • Dark discharge
  • Odor
  • Redness and swelling of the ear canal
  • Pain
  • Itchiness
  • Crusting or scabs in the ears

What Causes Ear Infections in Dogs?

The canine ear canal is more vertical than that of a human, forming an L-shape that tends to hold in fluid. This makes dogs more prone to ear infections. Ear infections are typically caused by bacteria, yeast, or a combination of both. In puppies, ear mites can also be a source of infection.

http://www.meadowsvetclinic.com/ear-infections.html

Factors that may predispose your dog to ear infections include:

  • Moisture, which can create a prime growing environment for bacteria and yeast
  • Allergies, which lead to ear disease in about 50 percent of dogs with allergic skin disease and 80 percent of dogs with food sensitivities
  • Endocrine disorders, such as thyroid disease
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Wax buildup
  • Foreign bodies
  • Injury to the ear canal
  • Excessive cleaning

Truffle’s persistent ear infection

Puppies comes with great responsibility. Who doesnt know? I knew what I was getting into when I got Truffle. Well, at least I thought I knew. I never expected myself to be dealing with persistent allergy problem and also ear infection.

Truffle have 2 ongoing issues: environmental allergy and recurring ear infection.

I will talk about how I dealt with his ear infections since day 1 in this blogpost.

Kindly note that I will be listing some products that I used on Truffle below. If you want to try the below products, kindly get your vet’s approval or suggestion first before purchasing. But generally, the products I mentioned are safe to use for all breeds as they are sold in our local vet clinics. I tried many products before finding out the best one for Truffle, so if you are experiencing the same problem as me, take time to find out which product works best!

The first time

When I first found out about his ear infection, his ears were all red and itchy. As a first time puppy owner, I did not dare to clean his ear and I went to the vet for consultation.

A microscopy with stain test was done and confirmed that Truffle have yeast infection in both ears.

Vet A prescribed Dermotic ear cleanser (40ml) and EPI-otic skin and ear cleanser (125ml).

Dermotic: https://shp.ee/dutdy3s

EPI-otic https://shp.ee/m5vx9s2

EPI-otic is a great everyday ear cleanser, I recommend every dog owner to have a dog ear cleanser at home. It is good to clean them once a week, preferably after shower.

However, Dermotic is only effective during the first treatment of Truffle’s ear infection.

Subsequently…

After the first successful treatment of dermotic, Truffle’s ear infection came back again after a few months. I purchased both EPI-otic and dermotic via shopee and self prescribe, it works but his ear infection keep coming back with a few months interval. Example, it came back every 3 months, but cleared up with a week of self prescription and ear care.

During this on and off ear infection period, I did not consult the vet as I thought that they will prescribe the same medicine, so why not save on consultation fees, transport fees and also medication fees? Everything is cheaper on Shopee.

It got worse

After a year and a half, Truffle’s ear infection came back again with full force. This time round, there were black discharge and his ears were red and inflamed.
Warning- some people might get grossed out by the photos below.

This was when I know that the current ear drop (dermotic) was no longer effective and I bought Truffle to vet B. Vet B saw the photos above and prescribed Aurizon ear drops (20ml).

Aurizon: https://shp.ee/cxe8mai

As per vet instructions, I were to clean the ears everyday with Epi-otic, then apply Aurizon twice per day for a week.

Truffle’s ear infection improved and all the discharge were cleared, his ears were no longer inflamed too.

Then.. It came back.. Again…

Yup, you guessed it.

Truffle’s ear infection came back again, with the same black discharge and red ears. I went back to Vet B and they did a microbiology test (Aerobic culture and sensitivity test). Cost of this test is $85.

Results: Heavy growth of yeast, Malassexia sp. is noticed. No bacteria pathogen is noticed.

Yeast infection, again. This time around, Vet B prescribed Dermotic ear drops because they only carry Aurizon and Dermotic.

However, Dermotic did not work on Truffle this time round. His naughty ears built up a resistance for this 2 common ear drops and I had to go to Vet C for second opinion and other variety of medications.

My experience with Vet C

Before I mention the medications they prescribed, I would like to let you know that Vet C charged me $65 consultation fee for “second opinion”. I will not mention any names here, but it is a popular clinic in Serangoon. Their regular consultation fee is $36.

I am already in distress over the fact that Truffle’s ear infection is not improving and causing him pain, Vet C gave me another punch by charging me a “second opinion” consultation fee of a whopping $65. I accepted it, with Truffle’s recovery in mind.

Vet C did an Ear Diffquick Cytology, yeast was detected in both ears, slightly more on the left ear.

Of course, being an expensive clinic, they recommended K9 biotic Otic Gel ($62).

It is a leave in treatment. No cleaning the ear or showering within 1 week. When it dries up, it looks like the photo on the right.

Vet C first cleaned his ears, then applied the medication which will dry up in his ear canals to act on the infection.

Vet C assures me that this leave in medication will work as it has proven effective for previous customers.

Next scheduled review is in 2 weeks time.

After 2 weeks, the ear infection is still there…

Vet C then recommended me a second round of K9 Biotix Otic Gel. Yes, 2 times of this gel cost me $124. I agreed, I hoped that the vet’s recommendation is right.

Nope.

HIS EAR IS STILL INFECTED.

I went back after 2 weeks for review and did an Ear Diffquick Cytology and results were: Yeast infection is still present.

Vet C asked me if I want a third round of K9 Biotix Otic Gel, since his condition is improving. Of course I said no! I want the infection to be cured, not improve.

I then asked them for an alternative and they recommended me the Trizultra + Keto Medicated ear wash (118ml).

The winner

This is a medicated ear wash that provides antibacterial and antifungal action, it is effective against various fungi. Its anti fungal properties helps reduce yeast and bacteria, which in turn prevent and treat infection.

I had my doubts with this ear wash, but Truffle’s infection cleared up within days!

I washed his ears twice daily for a week, then decreased frequency to once daily. Now its once per week.

I am using this ear wash exclusively every week and stopped epi-otic. Truffle’s have a high risk of infection, a mild ear cleaner might not be for him.

I paid $75 for this cleanser at Vet C, amazon sells for $29.93 inclusive delivery.

Trizultra + Keto Amazon: https://bit.ly/36fY6nu

Takeaway

This experience really taught me what is patience, what works for others might not work for Truffle. Usually, dermotic and aurizon is sufficient to clear ear infections, together with epiotic ear cleanser.

K9 Biotix Otic Gel is definitely a waste of time and money as it did not clear his ear infections at all, despite being administered for 2 weeks.

I spent $408 on Vet C before they recommended me the Trizultra + Keto Medicated ear wash.

The process of finding the right medication takes time and I hope that the medicated ear wash will be effective for a long time and that Truffle do not build a resistance.

I highly recommend all dog owners to wash their furkid’s ear at least once weekly, even for dogs with upright ears. Maintain good hygiene to reduce the risk of having ear infection. EPI-otic is a good gentle cleanser for ear hygiene maintenance. https://shp.ee/m5vx9s2

Its almost a year since the episode of Truffle’s crazy ear discharge. I hope my journey will provide you with some insights regarding ear infections, and that you never have to experience it.

Stay safe,

Truffle and Joey

Does Crate Training help dogs with Separation Anxiety? Read this article to find out.

With working from home restrictions slowly easing, pets raised during the pandemic may grow to develop separation anxiety once their owner is out of their line of sight.

In order to help pawrents whose dogs may suffer from separation anxiety, Team #TWA has reached out to QiuLi, AKA @taroandtoastie, to learn more about what it entails.

Read on to learn about QiuLi’s experience with crate training, and how Taro’s separation anxiety has since improved.

Experience with Crate Training

Hello! Tell us more about your relationship with Taro.

Hello! Taro is my first dog and I’m mainly the one feeding, training and playing with him that’s why he is very attached to me.

Credits: QiuLi and Taro

Being a first-time dog owner, I didn’t know much about dog training. At 3 months old, Taro was a little terror. He showcased slight aggression when handling, a tendency for resource guarding and kept chewing on things he’s not allowed to.

It definitely wasn’t what I thought having a dog would be like. But since working with him on setting structure and boundaries, our relationship definitely grew stronger and he is able to understand what is most expected of him.

What is separation anxiety and how does it affect your daily life with Taro?

I think Separation Anxiety in dogs is characterised by their inability to cope when left alone.

They would get stressed and start to whine, bark, howl, pace around. They just can’t seem to lie down and settle. If left to roam freely, they might even display destructive behaviours or have indoor accidents despite being potty trained.

As I work from home most of the time, Taro had always been by my side and follows me wherever I go into the house. He is only able to nap during the day if I am nearby or within his line of sight. Thus it became quite stressful, especially on days that I am heading out because he would whine the moment I accessed my closet.

If he’s allowed to free roam, he will obsessively follow me everywhere and start pacing around because he’s either excited that we’re heading out or panicking that I’m leaving him at home. I used to arrange for someone at home to accompany him but he refused to engage with family members either. He would just wait for me to come back and that’s when I realized I needed to do something to boost his independence and to have a healthier state of mind.

Bring us through a day of training with Taro.

Taro was crate trained since the day we brought him home. He is able to sleep overnight and nap during the day in the crate in the day but once he is awake he whines and barks to be let out. Other than that, he spends most of his time free-roaming throughout the house.

When I started working on his Separation Anxiety, I moved his crate out into the living room so he could learn to sleep overnight alone. The first night, he barked and howled throughout and would not settle down to sleep. After a week or so, he could sleep overnight without any whining. We also stopped engaging with him at home, refrained from giving him too much affection (though I still do sneak in some affection time haha) or playing excessively with him.

Credits: QiuLi and Taro

Hence, whenever he’s at home, he’s either in the crate or hanging out on the cot. We stopped letting him free roam the house as well. I would bring him down for potty and walks twice a day and I use his meals to do training for some mental stimulation. When we go outside, I would use his toys to engage with him. This taught him to focus better despite having distractions.

On days when my family members are not at home, I will also take the opportunity to leave him alone in the crate while I sit outside the house and observe him through the camera. He usually naps for the first hour but once awake he begins to whine before going back to sleep. After 2-3 hours, I will go back in and he will begin to whine for my attention. Despite this, I will continue to ignore him for at least 1-2 hours depending on how fast he calms down. This helps to teach him that leaving and coming home is not a big deal.

How long has it been since you started crate training and have you noticed any improvements?

Credits: QiuLi and Taro

It has been about 3 months since we started this new routine and his Separation Anxiety has significantly reduced. He used to whine when he saw me gathering clothes, or when he hears me preparing my bag to head out. He even whines when I am just visiting the toilet. After training, I can head to the toilet without getting him anxious. Though he still does whine a little when he sees me preparing to head out, it is a lot lesser compared to last time and he stops when I step out of the house.

Advice for Beginners

Do take note that QiuLi is not a professional trainer. Hence, interested pawrents are advised to consult a professional if they encounter behavioural issues.

How can I introduce crate training to my dogs?

If you have a puppy, that would be the best and easiest time to crate train them. Older dogs that require crate training might need a longer time to adapt. You’d need a lot more patience to endure the transition period where they’ll be whinier.

The ultimate aim is to let them know that the crate is a safe haven that does not harm them. This would help them fully relax in the crate. I always use food and toys to help them associate the crate with positivity so that they would enter it of their own free will.

You can start by feeding meals outside, yet near to the crate. Afterwards, slowly progress to placing some food inside the crate so that they would willingly step inside it. For puppies that nap frequently, invite them to nap inside the crate for short periods of time throughout the day. If they’re awake and starts to bark, do not attend to them immediately and only let them out when they’ve quieted down.

It is also important to choose the correct crate size. Small crates might be uncomfortable for them. Big crates may result in potty accidents inside. The length of the crate should be just ample for them to walk one round and height should still provide some allowance while they’re standing.

When it comes to crating overnight, most puppies tend to whine in the middle of the night as it’s a new environment and they’re separated from their family. I took this chance to potty train Taro. When he begins to whine in the middle of the night, I wait for him to quieten down before bringing him out to his designated potty area. I then put him back to the crate straight after.

Credits: QiuLi and Taro

While doing this, you want to make sure there are no fun distractions as we do not want them to think that whining can get them out of the crate for some cuddle/baby (affections) instead.

Sometimes after he has gone to potty and he still continues to whine in the crate, I would bring him out to potty again so he knows that whining only provides potty visits. There are times we went to and fro from crate to potty at least 3 times (and all 3 times he did go) before he settled.

Another method that worked incredibly well for us (after you know he definitely cleared his bowels), was to sit in front of the crate door and leave the door open. The moment he attempts to step out, shut the door to prevent him from doing so. I would repeat this until he gives up trying to come out and would eventually settle. After around 1 week, Taro was able to sleep in the crate without waking up in the middle of the night.

What should pet owners take note of when pursuing Crate Training?

When it comes to any aspect of dog training, I think consistency is very important.

Do the same thing every day, set up a routine, and make it into a habit and they’ll adapt/learn quicker. I know some people cannot bear to ignore their whines when they’re crated and hence give up. Yet, I assure you crate training definitely has more pros than cons. We just need to persevere during the initial stage and be consistent and you’ll be able to reap the results after.

PROS

  1. It provides your pet with a place to relax and sleep, hence reducing their sense of heightened alert whenever a passerby walks outside the house.
  2. It keeps them out of trouble and from practising bad behaviours, your house and items do not get destroyed and there are no potty accidents.
  3. Preventing separation anxiety as they learn to settle on their own. Remember to not only crate them when you are leaving the house as they might then associate the crate as being left alone. Crate them during the day for short periods of time even when you’re home so it becomes a normal routine.

A big thank you to @taroandtoastie for sharing her experience with crate training! For pet owners whose cats suffer from separation anxiety, we urge you to read Sherlyn and Leo’s experiences.

What is your main concern when it comes to providing for Lexi? (in terms of food etc)

Lexi truly enjoys eating all kinds of food! However, it is always reassuring to know that food or supplements are well-liked by her before committing or purchasing the full-sized product.

For grooming and cleaning products, it is important for us to check their effectiveness of it for Lexi’s current needs. My family has a really sensitive nose so the products have to be well-scented. We would also like to ensure she has no allergic reactions to the product.

Lastly, being more budget-conscious, I would only be willing to pay knowing that a product is really good for my dog. It also reduces wastage since you only buy products that you have confidence in!

How did you hear about Pawjourr’s Sampling system?

I was first introduced to Pawjourr through Instagram stories by various pet owners. They had just expanded their product redemptions from 3 to 5 items and had released a full-size sample product! After seeing several more stories about Pawjourr, it led me to sign up for their Pawjourr+ membership to give it a try.

How was the redemption process like?

It has been really simple and smooth since the beginning! The website is easily accessible on your phone or laptop, and you’d be spoilt for choice with the number of samples available! Each sample would include the ingredients used, where you could buy it and reviews from past user redemptions.

With a flat delivery fee, the item usually arrives at my doorstep within a few days.

Just for fun, I also did a 1-minute cart out challenge for Pawjourr’s sampling redemption! My record is currently at 40 seconds!

Double click to watch their 1-minute cart out challenge!

Awesome! We are impressed at the speed of your check out. What kind of Samples have you redeemed thus far?

We have redeemed all kinds of samples through Pawjourr – wet canned food, kibbles, dental chews, pee pad, waste bags, food toppers, single-ingredient treats, supplements, grooming and cleaning essentials.

What appeals to you most about Pawjourr’s samples?

The sample sizes always come in ample quantities and are well-sealed! Even when it is repackaged, the team at Pawjourr labels it clearly.

There have been a few brands that have given wonderful full-sized products such as JJ E-Homes Pee Pad Pack, Chuku’s Kitchen, The Grateful Dog Ready Meals and OneV.

Treats are always Lexi’s favourites!

lexi.the.spitz

Samples are a great way to get to know your dog’s needs or wants. These can be exemplified by the incidents below.

Incident 1

We were looking for a new kibble to let Lexi try, and my mum was eyeing the Absolute Holistic Vegan Diet with Oats and Peas. For a dog who loves all kinds of food, this was the first time she outright rejected the kibble on its own. She would only begrudgingly eat the kibble when mixed with her other food. We were thankful that we did not commit to buying it!

Incident 2

With the release of supplements, it gave Lexi a chance to try all types ranging from chews, soft gels, powdered and tablets. Some tablets were too large and she simply would not swallow it even when mixed with food. For the smaller tablets, she could only eat it when hidden into her meals. After that experience, I would only purchase supplements in soft chew form.

Lexi’s supplement collection so far!

Through the positive and not-so-positive experiences, sampling allows pet owners to understand their dog’s likes and dislikes. It allows us as owners to make the best decision for them when purchasing new products.

Do you recommend sampling from Pawjourr? Why or why not?

We highly recommend everyone to try sampling from Pawjourr as it can benefit all kinds of pet owners! Whether you are just curious and would like to try more doggy products, or considering purchasing an item but aren’t sure whether your dog would like it – Pawjourr sampling helps resolve it!

Personally, it has been a lot of fun trying out different products, writing reviews and taking photos and videos of Lexi! It gives me a reason to spend time with her and capture precious moments. She definitely enjoys the fruits of her labour (aka. treats) too!

Since being with Pawjourr’s sampling programme, it has helped me to understand Lexi’s likes and dislikes. It introduced me as a first-time dog owner to the huge variety of products available to dogs! Most importantly, the products purchased after trying them through Pawjourr’s sampling programme are those that I have full confidence in. Say goodbye to buyer’s remorse! 😉

Have you since re-purchased any of the samples?

Yes, we have found a few brands or products that we enjoyed! There are many other samples the hooman would like to re-purchase, but it takes some time for one dog to go through her food and treats.

Here is the list of samples we eventually purchased:

Earthbath Oatmeal and Aloe Conditioner

The smell is really lovely, and Lexi kept sniffing it. The effects were immediately soft fur! As a bonus, the price is incredibly reasonable for a good amount.

Pet Natural’s of Vermont Daily Probiotic

I fell in love with the cute bone-like shape! I was honestly kind of disappointed when the full-size product from iHerb came in a rectangular shape instead. It has a stronger smell because it’s duck flavoured. Love how it has pre-and probiotics in one tiny chew!

Instinct Grain-free Wet Topper

Lexi really enjoyed the wet topper provided in the sample! When Pawjourr finally released the full-sized product on their Shopee shop, we decided to get a different kind under their limited ingredients series (lamb/turkey). It is individually packed to mix up your dog’s meals!

Chuku’s Kitchen Fresh Food

Eco-friendly packaging, customized meals based on each pup’s nutritional requirements, fresh and delicious fuss-free meals for your dog. Bought one subscription to help with Lexi’s post-spay healing. She was jumping like a kangaroo by the end of it!

Doggiebalm

Though the price-point is a little much for this hooman, I got these at a great deal during their clearance promotion. My favourite must-have item from Doggiebalm is the Natural Coconut Shampoo and Conditioner!

Natural Cologne Spritz

It left a great smell on my dog and clothes for a few days. Great to cover-up the “dog” smell or to freshen up in-between baths.

100% Natural Leave-in Conditioner

Bought it to assist during brushing sessions, as it helps to detangle her fur.

Natural Coconut Shampoo and Conditioner

A soap-free quick rinse-off formula that is similar to castile soap. It works great after walks or for weekly freshening up (especially during hot weather seasons) without drying out your dog’s hair.

NaturVet Tear Stain Supplement

I like supplements which look like treats since Lexi is extremely food motivated. Since trying the product, her tears will still occur (it’s not a miracle worker). However, we clean her eyes at least twice a day after meals and it prevents the staining.

Aon Happy Tails Pet Insurance – Interview with Debby and Mocha

We always want the best for our pets.

The cost of pet ownership is high, and the cost of their medical bills even higher. When owning a pet, it is important for us to determine their physical health before engaging with surgeries. Our pets are unable to verbalise what they feel internally hence the multitudes of consultations, x-rays and blood tests before we are able to truly determine what ails them.

Last month, we heard from Jane and considered the benefits of pet insurance with her. This month, we decided to reach out to a paw-rent who has recently discovered Aon Happy Tails pet insurance and to garner a better understanding of what drew her to consider Happy Tails.

Hi there! Tell us more about Mocha, and your relationship with them!

We got Mocha at the end of 2018. My previous dog, Jack Russell had passed on six years before and my son had been bugging us to get a dog so we thought that it was finally time to get a new fur kid.  Mocha is very timid and shy, it took quite a while for her to actually get comfortable with us but once she did she started following me everywhere. During CB (Circuit Breaker 2020), we truly bonded with her and she became much more comfortable being playful with us. On trips to the dog park, she remains happy to explore the park and runs around even if she is not playing with other dogs.

How do you and Mocha spend time together this June holidays?

This June Holiday, there is not much we can do as we are still under phase 2A (ha) in Singapore. Yet, we still made time to go for walks in the parks. We also plan to bring her for a swim once we can meet up with more people.

How do you work to ensure the safety and well being of your furkid?

To ensure the safety and wellbeing of my furkid I always give her fresh good food, supplements, and bring her for regular walks so that she has enough exercise. She is not very active at home. Additionally, I always make sure to bring her to the vet if I notice anything amiss with her.

What concerns do you have when visiting the vet?

Just like humans visiting the doctors, our main concern when we visit the vet is the cost of the treatment.

Upon hearing this, we asked her about her knowledge of pet insurance. Aon Happy Tails in particular, helps to offset some of the costs incurred by medical procedures.

Have you heard of pet insurance prior to this conversation?

I have heard of pet insurance prior to this conversation! I heard about it from fellow fur parents who had signed up for pet insurance. I think it is important because it will help us cover the cost of any emergency treatment for our furkids.

How do the coverage plans offered by Aon Happy Tails alleviate your concerns (as mentioned above)?

I think the coverage is pretty good as I am very concerned about IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease) as a dachshund owner.

IVDD is a paralysis caused by back problems and short-legged dogs are quite prone to having it. Treatment may include rehabilitation or even surgery hence finding out that Aon Happy Tails covers surgery in their insurance plan made them quite appealing to me.

Will you be purchasing Aon Happy Tails in the foreseeable future?

Yes, I will!

Debby’s concerns regarding treatment costs and emergency medical procedures are extremely common amongst pet owners. Simplydollar states that medical costs are the most expensive aspect of owning a pet, with the average vet visit ranging from $50 to $400.

When it comes to sudden health complications, costs can go even higher, or double, to accommodate the needs of the pet.

Aon Happy Tails’ comprehensive insurance scheme prioritises supporting pet owners through sudden surgical procedures that may arise from new complications in their pet’s health. These complications do not include pre-existing conditions which have already been assessed by the vet.

Regardless, as Debby has aptly mentioned, pets are always at a growing risk of developing new conditions such as the IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease) for dogs. To ensure the safety of our pets, and to reduce wallet pains from unexpected medical costs – Pet insurance is a great way to keep us and our loved furkids safe and protected!

What is Pet Insurance? Why Do I Need It?

In one of our previous articles, we learnt about Jane and Milky’s experience with entropion. Entropion is a condition in which eyelids begin to roll inwards to the eyeball. It commonly affects animals who have thick eyelids, such as Chow Chows.

At the end of her anecdote, she wonders about Aon Happy Tails Insurance.

We sat down with Jane once more to discuss the benefits of pet insurance, and how owning one might have eased the financial burden she experienced.

Hi Jane. We understand that it’s been some time since Milky underwent his eye surgery. Can we ask how he’s doing now?

Jane: He is doing great now! However, the vet recommended undergoing 2-3 more surgeries as his eyelid will continue to drop as he grows older.

For now, we pay close attention to his tear stains, and/or if he starts scratching his eye excessively. It pains our heart to see him go through multiple surgeries at a young age.

I felt truly distressed reading about Milky’s experience with entropion. In your articles, you mentioned having to pay out lots of money to cover Milky’s consultations and surgeries. What was the total estimated bill incurred?

Jane: All in all, we spent close to $6,000. As it was our first time overcoming the entropion issue, we went for multiple vet consultations. We also had to cover for corrective surgery as the first one was unsuccessful. It was a very stressful period as we had to manage our emotions of watching our boy go through a difficult time. We also struggled to decide whether to go for the best treatment or the best financial decision.

Luckily, I had my husband with me hence we were able to share the burden, and alternate between roles (i.e. when he gets too emotional, I will try to be the logical one and make a decision from gathered data, and asking questions).

I’m so sorry to hear that. I hope your family feels much better now. Overall, what would you conclude was your biggest takeaway from this experience?

Jane: At the end of the article, I mentioned coming across Happy Tails pet insurance. I think having said pet insurance might have helped us A LOT. Compared to Western countries, local pet owners are unlikely to purchase insurance as they feel it might be more expensive in the long run.

Yet, I disagree! We spent a lot of money to ensure Milky’s health. If we had been insured, we might have been able to alleviate some of the costs incurred especially through insurance claims!

I see! Do you think owning pet insurance is important?

Jane: Owning pet insurance might be beneficial in the long run. I think a large stigma against pet insurance stems from the fact that there are no agents actively selling pet insurance. As a result, pet owners are afraid claims will be difficult, and/or there will be hidden clauses.

I would advise pet owners to make sure they read the T&Cs carefully to ensure that they fully understand the policy and what type of expenses can be claimed and what cannot be claimed. Also, check the duration given between each claim!

Thanks Jane!

Pet Insurance helps to protect the well-being of your fur friends. Like regular insurance, pet insurance covers medical fees incurred by vet visits.

In Singapore, options for pet insurance are rather limited. However, for pet owners who are largely concerned with the cost of medical bills- Happy Tails pet insurance offers a comprehensive medical plan. Their coverage extends beyond one-off accidents, going beyond to consider outgoing costs in medical care for injuries and illnesses.

Aon Happy Tails Pet Insurance promises to cover a wide range of fees and expenses such as:

  • Diagnostic tests such as x-rays and blood tests culminating in surgery
  • Surgery fees
  • Medications
  • Chemotherapy charges
  • Room and board charges
  • Post-surgery follow-up treatments
  • Surgical implants

This helps to alleviate some of the burden pet owners might experience with veterinary medical bills. Like Jane, many pet owners may undergo repeated consultations and surgeries to ensure the well-being of their pets. With pet insurance, such expenses can be covered and subsequently claimed. That way, you can keep your pets safe while reducing the pressure unexpected surgical procedures can have on your wallet.
