Bronco Pâté a Day for a Happy Doggy

Here at Pawjourr, we offer a variety of free samples for our pet influencers to try.

Recently, we released a collection of Bronco Pâté, offering up to 7 different flavours.

Bronco Pâté recipes are formulated without any grains, artificial preservatives or added colouring. Plus, their use of organic ingredients provides the necessary nutrients to your dog’s diet.

We reached out to jr.boyboy and his owner to find out more about their experience with Bronco Pâté.

Jr. Wong Boyboy is an adorable Shih Tzu dog who currently has over 1k followers on Instagram.

Interview with Jr.Boyboy

Hi there! I would love to know more about Jr’s mealtime habits. What would you consider your top concerns regarding Jr’s diet?

Jr usually has home-cooked food for his meals, boiled meat with vegetables (with the broth/soup because he doesn’t drink often from his water bowl hahaha).

Luckily, he doesn’t really have any preference because he is very food driven! My top concerns are mostly centred around his meat allergies because his skin is very sensitive.

Alongside his meals, there are supplements we add on such as glucosamine & coconut oil with his breakfast and fish oil, vitamin E, and rosehip with dinner.

How did you first hear about Bronco Pâté and what drew you to acquire said product?

I first heard of it through TWA/Pawjourr and it interested me because of the ingredient list. I liked that the pates have limited ingredients because many other affordable wet food brands contain unhealthy components such as salt, baking soda, etc.

Some even have vague terms like “meat flavour” which usually contains chicken.

What was your impression of Bronco Pâté?

Aside from the beneficial ingredients, I like that the portion is just right for Jr because I prefer to purchase wet food in smaller packaging since he doesn’t eat wet foods often.

The design is also simple yet effective, the colours and visuals complement each other.

How did Jr take to Bronco Pâté?

Jr loved it when he first had it! Hahaha he gets very excited about wet food.

How does Bronco Pâté help to address the concerns you had for Jr?

I like that the ingredient list contains the specific proteins so, I need not worry about triggering his skin.

We understand that you have since converted to Bronco Pâté. How has Jr improved since feeding Bronco Pâté?

Jr still gets very excited when we feed him Bronco on the weekends as ‘fast food’, haha! He runs after us when we take out the pates and scarfs down the entire bowl.

Would you recommend this product to pet owners? Why or why not?

Yes! I would recommend this to other pet owners because it is a healthier alternative to other brands that contain vague and/or unhealthy ingredients. It is convenient and affordable, especially for small dogs.

For bigger dogs, I’d suggest for them to get the canned versions since it has more.

We would love to know your thoughts and opinions on our Pawjourr samples. If you are a pet owner who feels strongly about a product, reach out to us via Instagram and get a chance to be featured in our articles!

We once again thank jr.boyboy and his owner for their time and effort in answering our questions.

Each meal is high in lean animal-based protein and boosted with functional Asian and Western superfoods.

Gently Cooked Dog Food Chicken Recipe

Targeted at modern pet owners who are on the go and want the best for their pets, the range of hassle-free meals takes out the guesswork involved in preparing fresh meals at home.  All recipes are calibrated to be nutritionally balanced and complete for dogs according to AAFCO guidelines. Ready in under three minutes, pet owners simply need to feed the number of pouches based on their dog’s weight as the daily caloric requirements are already accounted for.

Founded by two friends who are passionate animal lovers, what began as a simple search for home-prepared recipes for their dogs, Lucy and Clash, sent the pair on a personal quest to create the healthiest and most irresistible meals for their best friends to enjoy. This served as the catalyst for The Grateful Dog in 2017, a fresh dog food company established in Singapore offering gently cooked meals. In 2021, The Grateful Dog was renamed The Grateful Pet to reflect the company’s expanded nutritional offerings for both dogs and cats.

8 Flavors For You To Choose From

Chukus Kitchen presents: Balanced Diets for pups!

THE WOOF AGENCY had the privilege of chatting with Chukus Kitchen, a company whose mission is to bring transparency and awareness in industry by engaging with board certified veterinary nutritionists to formulate our recipes.

Read along to learn about their tips and tricks when it comes to providing your pups with a well-balanced diet, along with some common misconceptions by fellow pawrents about pet diets in general.

Balanced Diets (Nutrition, Health & Wellness)

This should be an easy topic – we’ve all heard how nutritious carrots and sweet potatoes are when it comes to nutrition. Mixing these ingredients with a main meat protein would surely result in a hearty and healthy meal for our dogs, shouldn’t it?

Well, wrong! But wait, we forgot to mention the importance of supplementing a piece of bone or egg shell powder for that indispensable source of calcium… perfect! Sorry, wrong again!

Unfortunately, there isn’t a magical 50:25:25 (meat:vegetable:grain) ratio that will make a meal nutritionally balanced, it’s not that simple. With today’s blog, our goal is to build more awareness on what a “nutritionally balanced” diet for pets means and lightly cover its implications.

Nutritionally Balanced for Dogs

Dogs have very particular needs when it comes to nutrition, and when pet food formulators and veterinary nutritionists talk about dog nutrition they are in fact referring to very specific vitamins, minerals, and amino acids.

Do note that I strictly mentioned veterinary nutritionists (not pet food specialists) and pet food formulators, as both of them are qualified experts with a Master’s degree or PhD in nutrition, trained to understand the nutritional requirements of animals.

Implications Today

One of the concerning realities in our industry is that it is far too easy to start a business in selling food for pets that haven’t been formulated or reviewed by experts with proper credentials. Just as with humans, nutritional deficiencies over a prolonged period can be the cause of observable issues on the skin, haircoat, mood, energy levels and eventually even compromise our pet’s immune system.

Take Home Message

Ensuring dogs eat nutritionally balanced food is paramount and doing so will reduce the number of visits to the vet. Our industry can always benefit more from transparency and building awareness.

As with humans, our dogs follow the timeless phrase – “We Are What We Eat”.

THE WOOF AGENCY would like to thank Chukus Kitchen for their contribution and insights towards providing our pawrents with dieting knowledge!

Meet Chefs and Dogs, the TikTok star with more than 1M followers

Do you feed your dogs raw? Feeding of raw meat-based diets to pets has become an increasingly popular trend amongst pet owners in recent years.

If you are a TikTok fan, loves #ASMR and intrigued by the world of raw feeding, you would have definitely heard about Chefs and Dogs, who has since gathered more than 1M followers on their Tik Tok channel! ?

@chefsanddogs

What’s the first thing you think of when you hear the word “food”? #asmr #dogdad #pitbull #asmrsounds #rawfeddog #rawfeeding #dogsoftiktok

♬ Soothing Sounds – ASMR
https://www.tiktok.com/@chefsanddogs

We’re be honest – all of us here has been binge-watching their videos (I mean, who wouldn’t?!) From delicious sushi for rabbits, to woof-ing good pasta for your dogs, Chef and Dog has something for anyone who needs some recipes inspiration or just a break from all the Zoom calls (yes to ASMR). ??‍♀️

We are super excited to be able to interview Daniel to learn more about Chefs and Dogs journey – the motivations, challenges and even the little moments.

Meet Daniel & Caelan

Q: Tell us a little bit more about yourself and your pets!

I’m Daniel Tomas—chef by training and dog dad to two Australian Kelpies, Joey (boy) and Alkai (girl) and a border collie Caelan (boy) whose face is on the Chefs & Dogs logo.

Like the late David Bowie, Caelan has two different coloured eyes, a rare condition known as heterochromia, but no musical talents (that I’m aware of). We also have quails and foster cats & dogs.

Q: When was Chefs and Dogs founded? Are you doing this full-time now?

I founded Chefs and Dogs eighteen months ago as a local raw dog food delivery business in the capital of Australia (points for those who know this), Canberra. In addition to delivering raw meals, we sell a range of healthy treats and supplements Australia-wide.

You can purchase the Wagyu Christmas lunch from their website if you are based in Australia!

Running the small business has been a full-time job from the beginning, but over time I’ve invested more and more late nights producing TikTok, Youtube and Instagram content to spread awareness about pet nutrition.

Q: What got you started on feeding raw?

The journey started for me 6 years ago when Joey had lupus on his nose. After all manner of treatments proved ineffective, my partner and I consulted a holistic vet who advised changes to his diet.

Joey with Lupus

Through feeding a tailored raw diet along with a holistic approach guided by Kate from Holistic Paws, Joey underwent a remarkable recovery. It demonstrated to us what on the face of it sounds obvious—feeding a nutritious balanced diet to your pets, especially if they have special health requirements, can drastically impact their overall health.

Joey’s transformation after being fed raw

Q: What’s the motivation and reason for starting Chefs and Dogs? Did you self learn when it comes to feeding raw?

I learned raw feeding under the guidance of a holistic vet and dog nutritionist and I always advise my followers to do the same. Introducing fresh foods doesn’t need to be as radical as a complete diet overhaul. Whatever their level of comfort, we encourage pet-owners to take an interest in their pet’s nutritional needs.

Dinner ⁣is served ?

Q: Where do you get the inspiration/recipes for your video content?

I’m a chef by training and have been creating recipes for the better part of a decade. Most of my inspiration comes from the amazing community. We get requests for everything from hermit crab to snail meals!

Its time for some Pineapples! ?

Q: What do you think is your top challenge when it comes to Chefs and Dogs?

The response of our community has been overwhelmingly positive. I try to provoke people to think of their dog’s diets differently and sometimes this requires going a little over-the-top (wagyu burritos or Michelin-star lobster for dogs anyone?).

Sometimes I work hard on a recipe I love and no one is interested, other times I throw something together in ten minutes and it goes viral. Creating content is about having the courage to take risks and put yourself out there.

The hardest part is finding the right balance between content that is fun and engaging, but also provides educational information for pet owners.

Daniel, Chefs & Dogs
Happy Easter! ?

Q: Any tips for pet owners who wants to feed raw but not sure how to get started?

As with a lot of things, first do no harm. It’s best to take advice from a holistic vet and pet nutritionist to ensure you are feeding your dog a complete and balanced diet. But this doesn’t mean it’s too hard and safer to just stick to kibble—there are lots of ways you can gradually introduce fresh foods to your pet’s diet.

There are also a lot more local suppliers like us providing fresh and raw dog food which can help owners learn the ropes.

Meet Caelan, Alkai & Joey

There is always a trade-off between time, money and quality when it comes to cooking. I always say feed the best food you can afford with your budget, whether that is a little bit of a fresh or full fresh. Shop around for specials, build a good relationship with your butcher, buy in bulk and freeze. I go through some of these tips in my YouTube videos.

Food hygiene is essential when handling raw meat. Wear plastic gloves and always clean your hands, any utensils and preparation areas, as well as your dog’s bowl, between meals. While we’ve all experienced it at some point, it’s a bad idea to let your dog lick yours or your children’s faces—this can transmit bacteria.

Q: Of all the recipes and videos you have done, which is your favourite?

After over 400 videos it’s hard to pick! Birthday cakes are always fun—we make these for our clients and can cover all manner of themes. It’s as much fun for the owner to make as the dog to eat!

Cake is always a good idea

Q: What kind of viewership changes have you seen since you started making these videos?

The community has transformed since our early days and we’re so grateful to everyone who has been there from the start. We are seeing more and more owners of cats and other pets who are looking to feed fresh. Some of our followers may not even have a pet yet, but find the videos satisfying.

It’s a mixed community now and as the trends and specific areas of interest shift, I try to keep our core theme at the heart.

Q: What has been your proudest Chefs and Dogs moment so far?

While it’s fun to make viral content—I never would have thought I’d hit a million followers and receive almost 50 million video views a month—it’s the small things that have made me proud. In the early hours when I wrap up my work with the food business, I usually create a video and read through all of the comments and direct messages.

Hearing stories of pet-owners who have been inspired by my videos to feed their pets fresh food is hugely gratifying. You may have guessed I love dogs and the transformative impact they can have on our lives as owners, so I love hearing when it goes the other way.

Source: https://www.instagram.com/dinho_the_doggo/

Q: What is your ultimate vision and goal for Chefs & Dogs?

The vision has always been the same—spread awareness about the benefits of nutrition for a dog’s diet. I’d love to see fresh feeding becoming the norm, or at least fresh food be considered the most desirable diet for pets – just as it is for humans.

Daniel, founder of Chefs & Dogs

Ever tried munching on your doggo’s food? ?

Hands up if you are one of those crazy pet parents who tried their furkids’ food just to know how it tastes like ??‍♀️

Source: https://funvizeo.com/324bf80cfbd9a3c1/human-food-dog-food

Well, check out Furry’s Kitchen who recently partnered with celebrity chef Justin Quek to conceptualise a 3-course degustation meal at a pop-up restaurant called Terrier that put the brand’s home-cooked food to the ultimate taste and quality test with some of Singapore’s top food influencers.

Furry Kitchen shouldn’t be a stranger to most pet owners, given that they have been establishing a pretty active presence within the local pets community such as events & campaign with pet influencer marketing agency, The Woof Agency.

Stephen Chua, Founder of Furry’s Kitchen said: “This experiment challenges the perception that food for dogs tastes unpleasant and is made with undiscernible ingredients and preservatives unfit for human consumption.

Just like how we love to indulge in a delicious meal and feed ourselves and our loved ones with only the best ingredients possible, our furry friends deserve the same and can enjoy the same quality and freshness in their diet”.

The purpose was to break down the notion that food that dogs eat is unfit for humans. Guests were blown away by the flavour profiles, quality and freshness of the ingredients, giving their stamps of approval & demanding seconds. Some even likened it to grandma’s cooking.

Source: https://www.youtube.com/embed/dCOW851K4Ck

Chef Justin Quek added: “As with any social experiment, we had to keep certain variables under wraps to ensure the most unbiased results. We wanted to know if by removing the negative perception of dog food, we would discover that human-grade food made for dogs could taste both delicious and nutritious too.

The dishes the food influencers enjoyed have all been taste-tested and quality-checked by me personally. You have my word that I only serve my guests food that I believe in, and food that meets my standards”.

While of course there was an element of surprise, the majority of the influencers taking part in the experiment appreciated that they had not eaten dog food, just human-grade food prepared for dogs. They understood that all ingredients such as beef, salmon, brown rice, potatoes and broccoli are sourced from the same SFA-certified suppliers used by local Singaporean restaurants, promising the same quality for humans.

Benefits of HCF feat. Furry’s Kitchen

Similar to hooman, there are different diets that you can put your furkids on depending on your budget, lifestyle and personal preference. Home-cooked food (HCF) has remain as one of the top choices amongst pet owners for its:

  1. High-Quality Proteins & Fresh Ingredients

Furry’s Kitchen is about providing your dog with high-quality proteins, fresh vegetables and fruits. Their approach is similar to how we feed ourselves and our families. They call it “balance over time”, which will, over time, meet your dog’s needs if you vary the diet enough over a week or two. Feeding a wide variety of meat and vegetables give your dog the nutrition it needs.

2. No Preservatives & Additives

Only using the good parts of the animal. No by-products. They also say no to preservatives, additives and fillers. Their recipes are made by hand in small batches and gently cooked to retain their nutritional value. They only source our ingredients from the same suppliers who supply to restaurants in Singapore, the same quality fit for humans.

3. Nutritional Needs

Nothing gives more flavour and health benefits than fresh and quality ingredients. A diet full of high quality, fresh, minimally processes ingredients help to support the immune system and all other body functions essential for everyday health. Without it, your dog will be more susceptible to disease. They also retain a lot more nutritious value compared to processed foods.

HERE’S OUR TAKE:

At the end of the day, there are pros and cons to different diet and pet owners should do proper research (not just on the nutritional value) but also to take into consideration your lifestyle and budget — e.g. it can get pricey if you are a multi-dog household or owns a large breed who eats a lot more than your small dogs.

You can also check out some articles to learn more about HCF from our resident doggo owners here.

Last but not least, check out Furry’s Kitchen influencers #approved goodies here!

Brands pup-proved by Milky (Part 1)

Who is guilty of buying a tad too much when it comes to their furkids? Definitely me ?

I love to shop for Milky, but sometimes it seems to me that there are only that few vendors whom I can buy stuff for him – mainly those who enjoy high visibility on Instagram. I always wondered if there’s a way for us to dig the hidden gems (amongst the many, many on Instagram).

So here are some of the hidden gems I’ve unearthed through my times on Instagram (I will try notttt to mention the well-known ones), and just in time for Christmas! ?

1. Cakki.co

  • Website: https://cakkicollective.com/
  • Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cakki.co/
Source: https://cakkicollective.com

Cakki Collective is a boutique brand from Philippines which specialises in rope leashes, bandanas + more. ⁣ Their products are handmade & carefully curated⁣ with love.

Their bandanas range between S$6 – 15, depending on the size you are looking at.

Milky sporting this new bandana from Cakki

What I love about this brand

  • Obviously very much in love for their Instagram aesthetic and game
  • Super friendly and nice business owner
  • Handmade and their designs are really nice

I guess the only con is that since they are based overseas, I have to gather or consolidate orders before the worldwide shipping fee makes sense.

2. Truffleruffel Treats

  • Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/truffleruffel_treats
Source: https://www.instagram.com/p/CGRWhCsDi5M/

I came to know about this home-based store only because the owner is an influencer under our network. We worked with them for some campaigns and she very kindly gifted us some free samples to try!

Just look at the greedy face!

Pawjourr organised a Secret Santa gift exchange this year, and I would be sending some of her treats to my Santee! ? We also featured her bone broth recipe on The Woof Agency’s Instagram earlier this year and the effort is ?!! You can buy them bone broth at a super affordable price too

Source: https://www.instagram.com/p/CC0VgT_jVKo/

▫️24 cubes – 295-310g @ $6.50
▫️28 cubes – 355g-370g @$7.50

You can check out how she boil the bone broth here!

3. Husse Singapore

  • Website: https://www.husse.sg/
  • Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hussesg/
Source: https://www.instagram.com/p/CGSAAV2nM7Z/

Husse is a new brand which entered the Singapore market late 2019. They hail from Sweden and pride themselves in high quality pet food, specialising in not just dog & cats, but also horses! ?

Milky loves his Taste of the wild, so we won’t be talking about their kibbles range. Instead, we are a huge huge fan of their Laxolja (also known as salmon oil ?).

This is Milky a month after being on their salmon oil.

We sprinkle the salmon oil over his food and he gobbles them up like a cookie monster. It makes the entire meal looks much appetising and there’s definitely an improvement on his coat condition which is visible to the eye.

We have been on this product for the past 3 – 6 months and we highly recommend pawrents out there to consider trying it! ?

They are having a Christmas promo bundle now; 2 for $42 (UP $56)

I’ve also gifted other friends some of their other products, including their Vermi Tab (dewormer for dogs).

Pro Tip: Check out their tagged photos for discount codes from their ambassadors! ??

4. Instinct Pet Food

  • Website: https://www.lazada.sg/shop/instinct-pet-food-official-store/
  • Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/instinctpetfood_asia/
Source: https://www.instagram.com/p/CDOaf02DcYY/

I think Instinct Pet Food has been around for quite some time, but only became aggressive with their sales recently in Singapore. They are part of the Nature’s variety group – and the ladies who work there are so so so nice!

Source: https://www.instagram.com/p/CC8eq-CjOdG/

To be honest, there is a very low chance of us converting to 100% raw for Milky as we are not very confident about the food handling (though we have been tempted a few times by the benefits and The Dog Chef on Tik Tok).

So Instinct Pet is one of the brands we try to play around with the idea but with freeze dried nuggets etc. I’m very confident about the quality of their food and I’ve never heard anything about worms / weevils in their food vs. some other brands I see on Instagram. ?

I spoke to the owners before and I know how strict they are with the end-to-end (source of ingredients -> final product). But okay, it is on the expensive side since Milky is a big dog and eats quite a bit.

For the wet food, we alternate between their wet pouches and Bronco pate. As for the raw toppers, it’s really when he is being a good boy (but now we know he is okay with them and won’t “laosai”.

Everyone in the company actually love their products so much that we decided to bring them in and sell on our shopee! We only sell in bundles since Shopee has a lot of restriction around the shipping fees.

You can buy here: https://shopee.sg/pawjourr

5. Kin+Kind Singapore

  • Website: https://www.howlisticlife.com/kin-kind
  • Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kinandkind_singapore/

We got to know about Kin+Kind pet supplements through the sampling program offered by Pawjourr.

Pawjourr has a sampling program where pet owners pay $4.90 per month to check-out unlimited samples to try. In exchange, leave a review to help other pet owners make an informed choice.

They are also adding in more verticals like groomers, clinics, trainers etc. It is positioned to be the one-stop pet parenting app to make pet ownership easier, cheaper & much more convenient! ❤️

The pet supplements include:

+ Urinary Tract support: Free sample here!

+ Multi-vitamins: Free sample here!

+ Hip & Joint support: Free sample here!

Source: https://www.instagram.com/p/CH2W2-YD_Vi/

Check out #Whatsinmybowl flex with Milky! Special guest appearance by Clear Dog Treats (Shark cartilage powder) which you can find here, which I am obsessed with as well.

I hope this has been helpful to pet owners out there looking for some new websites or brands to stalk! ?

I think some of the brands here are pretty well-known already in the pets community, but there are a few other supplements which you can try and buy via Amazon.sg!

If you are like me and love finding new brands and products for your furkids to try, you should definitely give Pawjourr+ a go! ?

A (Failed) Raw Diet Journey

The raw diet for dogs and cats has always been a controversial topic amongst pet owners.

Common misconceptions

Many who’s against it have formed or hearsay misconstrued perceptions such as (but not limited to) “Omg won’t my pet attack humans/animals if it consumes raw meat?!”; or “Isn’t there salmonella bacteria in raw meat?”; or “It’s not nutritionally balanced.”; etc. These misconceptions have often been debunked by professionals and raw feeders, and there are many available raw diet providers that have nutritional consultations and catered portions. However, these are still valid questions and worries, to an extent, – it is with good intent we worry – as most of us love our furbabies more than anything in the world.

Contrarily, we hear and/or see several success stories, on social media especially. Successful raw diet feeders rave about the benefits and evident changes, advocating and encouraging those who are apprehensive to make the move. In fact, I approached and sought advice from many friends/acquaintances made through Jr’s Instagram and pet community groups on Whatsapp & Telegram. Everyone I’ve spoken with was very kind and encouraging, none withheld tips and encouragements!

Not all pets thrive with a raw diet

There seems to be a lack of “failed” raw diet testimonies due to the fear of backlash and/or comments from insistent raw feeders. I felt like I couldn’t share Jr’s unsuccessful experience publicly because it felt like everyone else flourished from their transition to raw; and there was this impending anxiety that some raw feeders would disagree with the idea of an unsuccessful attempt. When Loki shared his unsuccessful experience and similar fears of speaking out, I felt so relieved!

Haha, it was a moment of slight disbelief, I realized that I wasn’t the only one and many others have probably experienced likewise. I’m glad I can now share my experience, I hope those who’ve had unsuccessful experiences with raw diets alongside pro-raw feeders see, it’s okay that it didn’t work out, no matter the reason and/or outcome – there’s no ‘one diet fits all strategy.

Our initial decision to try out a raw diet

@jr.boyboy

I had actually considered transitioning Jr to a raw diet for a long period, I did extensive research and spoke with others for a year or so. I saw several success testimonials for dogs that faced long-term skin and coat issues, like Jr has struggled with dermatitis, yeast/bacterial infections, and more since puppyhood (which seems common with shih-tzus). Consecutively, Jr had an unfortunate incident last year which triggered a severe acute case of stomach inflammation and pancreatitis. He sought intensive treatment whilst inpatient in a veterinary hospital. After that incident, we maintained a low-fat diet but he still struggled with gastrointestinal issues like random soft stool or constipation and more.

With each success testimonial on my Instagram feed, with drastic before and after comparisons, the more my excitement grew and I was highly convinced it would work for Jr too. Every time I would research about the diet, speak to raw feeders, and scroll through success stories, my bias increasingly leaned towards pro-raw ideals. I was fascinated with its theories of feeding a primal diet which is supposedly most in-tuned with the psyche and biology of canines, positively impacting their health and wellbeing. With the information I’ve attained over a year, I was fully convinced so I decided to transition during the COVID-19 lockdown/circuit breaker period since I was able to closely monitor his behaviours and changes.

Transition and outcome

When I decided to transition, there were already difficulties communicating the benefits of raw to my family but I persisted and carried on with his diet transition. I heeded advice to slowly decrease the cooking time as he had been on a home-cooked diet. As usual, Jr started to get picky but he eventually ate the meat and offal. However, I noticed he vomited whenever he would eat the offal and he started to leave out certain offal parts like the kidney (fascinating, isn’t it, how their bodies notice what’s wrong?). After this, I decided to remove the offal and he stopped vomiting which was a huge relief.

[Haha, this part might be a bit TMI & graphic because I’m talking about Jr’s poop so, please skip to where I have indicated with an asterisk (*) if you’re uncomfortable!]
Although the vomiting stopped and he continued to eat most of the raw meat, his stool was very soft, which I knew was a common symptom during the transition but he seemed very uncomfortable and it persisted with lethargy which deeply concerned me. I had a bad gut feeling as his poop’s softness seemed too wet/watery with little to no solid pieces, much like bad diarrhea, unlike any other transitioning experience I’ve seen/heard of.

I was confused and stressed, as I was following the advised procedures, portions and steps but everything was going downhill and I felt extremely guilty for causing distress onto Jr. With the consistent symptoms of soft stool, discomfort and lethargy, I decided to switch back to his previous home-cooked food diet and he immediately felt better after two meals. Hence, our raw diet journey was, evidently, unsuccessful and I learnt that it wasn’t the right fit for Jr. There could’ve been a correlation to his previous GI issues, or maybe his body just wasn’t receptive, or maybe other reasons.

Afterthoughts

My experience hasn’t negatively impacted my perception of the raw diet, I have actually learnt to have unbiased viewpoints. I’m still glad I spent the time on thorough research but I now realise the lack of proper scientific studies on this topic. Understandably so, as studies have specific requirements and controlled environments. And it’s not to say I disagree with the raw diet theories now, I still think there’re truths to its theories and it could benefit many pets! Their results speak volumes for their advantages. Nonetheless, I think it’s essential for pet owners, who are looking into the raw diet, to remain unbiased and keep in mind the possibility of ‘failing’ too.

Here I conclude, is the raw diet too good to be true? No. Is it dangerous? No. Is it the only “right”/“best” diet for dogs and cats? Not necessarily. Will it turn your pet into a blood-thirsty monster? LOL no, eating raw meat ≠ bloodlust! Pets are aggressive due to abusive environments, lack of training, etc.

I genuinely believe there’s no ‘one diet fits all’ solution, as I’ve mentioned. The raw diet has clearly benefited many pets and that’s amazing! On the other hand, it is okay to not have had a successful experience. The raw diet wasn’t the first that didn’t work for us, kibbles and (most) wet foods also didn’t work well for Jr as he is allergic to chicken but many times ingredient lists with “poultry” or “meat flavours” etc. contain chicken byproducts. However, that doesn’t mean it wouldn’t work for others, there are many pets who thrive on kibbles and wet food diets too. Hence, we should be open to sharing negative/unsuccessful experiences (with all types of diets) and hold back judgment because everybody is different! ☺️

How To Choose A Suitable Diet

Even the best dog influencers and cat influencers out there have to be ensured a healthy diet to stay strong and active. There are a diverse variety of pet food options out there, but which types of foods are truly the best for your furkid? Here are some points to consider if you are in a dilemma over a suitable food option for your own pet:

Do your research well, and balance out certain factors

As the pet food industry continues to grow in popularity, there are now a multitude of diet options to choose from: from dry kibbles to cooked, freeze-dried and even raw food…the options are limitless. Not to mention, different commercial food brands and companies also offer their own unique benefits to stand out from their competitors.

All diets have their own pros and cons, and owners should do their own research and balance out particular factors in order to decide what is the most suitable option. For example, cost should be an important factor since maintaining a pet’s diet for the long term is key. Other factors may also include availability of food (only available locally or overseas), brand credibility and reputation, and so on.

Human foods and other unique treats

Owners might be tempted to give your pet a variety of foods, and that includes human foods or treats meant for other animals. However remember to do so with caution. Do a quick online check just to ensure that your pet can eat the right food; for example, human snacks and chocolates are not meant for any cat or dog! It might be tempting to prove your own pet unique as it eats a diet based on human foods, but that is not meant for every pet.

Every pet’s diet suitability is different

That also brings us to the most significant point that summarises it all: every pet is different, and it will be a journey of trial and error before you and your pet find out what is best for them. Certain breeds, for example, might be more predisposed to having sensitive stomachs, or needing certain supplements to boost their digestion and other health conditions. So do not take it for granted that just because other furkids are having a particular diet, your own furry friend should be doing the same as well! Instead, continue to observe and try out a variety of dietary options, and you will definitely help your pet find a suitable, healthy diet soon.
